Default A hard truth.
Starner Jones, MD

I am a seventh generation Mississippian and wanted to come back here after going somewhere else for college and medical school. My extracurricular interests are golf, hunting, fishing and college football.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~ This should be on the front page of every newspaper in America —in large bold letters. This was a "letter to the editor" in August 29th Jackson , MS , newspaper.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Sirs:
"During my last night's shift in the ER, I had the pleasure of evaluating a patient with a shiny new gold tooth, multiple elaborate tattoos, a very expensive brand of tennis shoes and a new cellular telephone equipped with her favorite R&B tune for a ringtone. Glancing over the chart, one could not help noticing her payer status: Medicaid. She smokes more than one costly pack of cigarettes every day and, somehow, still has money to buy beer.
And our Congress expects me to pay for this woman's health care? Our nation's health care crisis is not a shortage of quality hospitals, doctors or nurses. It is a crisis of culture — a culture in which it is perfectly acceptable to spend money on vices while refusing to take care of one's self or, heaven forbid, purchase health insurance. A culture that thinks "I can do whatever I want to because someone else will always take care of me." Life is really not that hard. Most of us reap what we sow.
Don't you agree?
STARNER JONES, MD
Jackson , MS
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.
I'd be suprised if this is real, but it does happen every day. We will never be able to make anyone be responsible for themselves. You can't turn away the sick, even if they are fools.
So during "last night's shift" he ran into a racist stereotype? Certainly there are numerous examples from many "cultures" of people exploiting the system but this is the one he noticed? If it is real it probably tells me more about the writer than the subject.
Anybody who works in a hospital E.R. see's that daily. It could be the mullet sporting redneck with meth mouth, the stereotype doesn't matter. It is the fact that this is, has been, and alway will be a drain on the system. Giving them something for free (healthcare) does not solve their problem. Anything that is free is by definition of little worth. Start being able to deny healthcare to those unwilling to pay, or at least limit their access to teaching hospitals or government clinics of some sort. Free healthcare for adults able to work should not be a right. What's next? Do we provide free college education to anyone who wants it, free food, internet access, clothing, etc.? Hell no! Go to work, save your money, or don't do things that make you sick.
Ain't gonna argue any of that. I just find it noteworthy which example sticks out the most in the writer's mind. Particularly when I'm guessing there are multiple examples in any ER on any night.
If this in the ER, how did he happen to find out that her cellular phone was equipped with her "favorite R&B tune?"
This is probably not a legit story, but obviously these things happen.
It depends on what part of the country you work in. The patients I see in Memphis fit this description, but the patients I see in rural Virginia fit razorhead's redneck description. Yeah, there is some crossover, but the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Memphis is the first example. Perhaps this fake individual practices in Memphis?
That's because the race of the patient is merely implied. It is a subtle way to invoke stereotypical imagery and fuel the fire of the darker side of the reader's prejudices. The biggest reason I question the writer's motives is that I think it is safe to say the real author isn't the person attributed with writing the piece. We can discuss the endless truths in conservative philosophy without cynically making it "us versus them".
Nice to see that most people on here aren't falling for the obvious race baiting. If you can't make a good argument for your viewpoint without going to these lengths, its obvious you are either too inept to make a proper logical argument on the subject or there isn't one
