| i dont mind people immigrating here but like some have said in this thread our tax system is not set up for it. the only way it would work is to go to the fair tax that way whether you are here legally or illegally you pay taxes | ||

| Isn't the fair tax just a federal income tax? I'm assuming that it would still require filing paperwork and would not be able to account for individuals being paid in cash with the employer and employee not reporting it. | ||

| no, the fair tax would replace all federal income taxes. it would raise the sales tax to its either 16% or 23% i cant remember, but it would make it where the only way you pay taxes out of your income is when you buy something, therefore if you dont want to pay taxes you dont spend your money and vice versa if you want to spend your money you pay taxes | ||

| The real problem here isn't the illegals as most of you guys have insisted--it's the system. I have no problem with as many people coming here as possible. This is (or was) the only country in the world where you could come and really do anything you put your mind to. Unfortunately, with all the entitlement programs we've lost a lot of that. So, like someone else brought up, it's either one or the other. You can't have welfare and open borders. I think open borders are important, but if you come here and don't have what it takes to succeed, head on home. Everyone has the chance to do and be whatever that want in America, and if you don't work hard enough, that's on you. Unfortunately, that not the way society works anymore because we've decided we need to take care of everyone else's problems. We could solve a lot of problems in this country if we started worrying about ourselves before everyone else. Milton Friedman: You will find that hardly a soul who will say that it was a bad thing. Almost everybody will say it was a good thing. ‘But what about today? Do you think we should have free immigration?’ ‘Oh, no,’ they’ll say, ‘We couldn’t possibly have free immigration today. Why, that would flood us with immigrants from India, and God knows where. We’d be driven down to a bare subsistence level.’ What’s the difference? How can people be so inconsistent? Why is it that free immigration was a good thing before 1914 and free immigration is a bad thing today? Well, there is a sense in which that answer is right. There’s a sense in which free immigration, in the same sense as we had it before 1914 is not possible today. Why not? Because it is one thing to have free immigration to jobs. It is another thing to have free immigration to welfare. And you cannot have both. If you have a welfare state, if you have a state in which every resident is promises a certain minimal level of income, or a minimum level of subsistence, regardless of whether he works or not, produces it or not. Then it really is an impossible thing. | ||

| If someone doesn't respect our laws enough to immigrate the lawful way, what makes anyone think that they'll respect anything else once they get here? Only the human trash of the world does things that way and I for one, don't care to have other countres' trash dumped on our shores. | ||

| Back in the 1800 and early 1900's when my family emigrated here, they had to follow the laws by sitting in quarantine at Ellis Island. They did this to have a better life for themselves, their children, and all of their future offspring. They left their family, their towns, their friends and their jobs, to sit on a boat for a couple of weeks, fight off starvation and storms, for a chance at living in this great country. They followed the law. As such, my family has repaid this country in service in WWI, WWII, Vietnam, and Iraqi Freedom. I have had members in my family in every branch of the military, most frequently, my brother currently a Captain in the US Army. Immigrants are what made this country, and I firmly believe our future will be determined by our immigrants. That's what makes this country great, and the only one of its kind. However, we have laws. They need to be followed. Without laws there is chaos. Chaos is the antithesis of our way of life. If our laws are flawed, we have 3 bodies of government that can fix them. However, they still need to be followed. I don't care if its drug abuse, murder, media piracy, or immigration, laws are laws. You don't get to pick and choose which ones to follow. This isn't a buffet. Bottom line is that if you want to come live in this country, come in the way we say so. | ||

52 pretty much said more eloquently my whole take on the entire issue. No one has problems w/people coming here, I even said so repeatedly but some folks 'round here didn't seem to grasp that concept. It's the way they do it. This is a country. A modern country. Not the 1600's when manifest destiny still existed and in parts of the world people thought the Earth was flat and the stupid institution known as slavery was rampant. Comparing society today to society then is outright assinine. We can only take so many of your poor, your sick, your whatever. And we do have processes in which you can come to this country should you seek a new life here. Perhaps some of you should do a little bit of research into what Mexico demands of the United States in allowing their citizens to come here, and then on the flip side what they do to Guatemalans and even some Chiapans (region of Mexico bordering Guatemala....it amounts to racial profiling down there) regarding immigration on Mexico's southern border. Some of you really need to wake up. If you think it's so great, you guys foot the bill for all these services that are getting abused by people who AREN'T AMERICAN CITIZENS. | ||

| I am a American with both liberal and conservative tendencies and I can see what's good for America and what's bad for America and I am also a historian. That being said I don't like where were going as a country and unfortunately were not well served by our politicians, people I didn't always feel this way but we need to start electing intellectuals over dumb arses to that extent we need people like Ron Paul or America First type leaders. The reason I say this is because we are truly in a new world now things that we were able to flub over and still get by 10 years ago want work now. we can't afford to be caught flat footed and sadly the reason the recession is so bad is because we were. I know this is a great country but hey what are we doing to maintain that status? are we energy independent is our healthcare spending inline with our pocket books and can we truly afford a open border and you all know the answer is NO! We are wasting billions on never ending wars and to be honest if they were to end today we would still be in trouble due to the fact we have so many entitlement programs that act as a drain on society because in order to keep them funded taxes would have to be raise on everyone. The problem with that is all these programs were based on a out molded system you know the one we would have enough people working to maintain the status quo, so much for that. | ||
