Going with my girlfriend to Atlanta this weekend to meet up with some old HS friends, just wondering if anyone knows what kind of traffic to expect. It seems like it wouldn't be too bad since we're leaving Friday afternoon, but the closer we get to ATL, the more obnoxious it'll become. I assume the cops will be pretty extreme too, no? thanks

It's gonna suck balls..... state troopers are gonna be errywhere. The crackdown starts tomorrow.
I've been driving between Shreveport, La and Jackson, MS via I-20 all week and it hasn't been too bad, but of course that's nowhere near Atlanta. But I can say that out of state/region drivers haven't been too thick and the MS & LA state troopers have been pretty thin.

"Crackdown"
That smells of boys in blue just looking for drunks..... I wont' be drinkin and driving though, so.................. Are you sure the traffic will suck? I want to get there before 8

I've never had a good experience drivin' to Hotlanta on a Friday, let alone before the 4th..... I could be wrong. It'd be the first time this year if I was.
If Atlanta is anything like Dallas, then that means leaving about 4 days early.
Well, you definitely want to be making your way around the perimeter before 2pm. With the holiday, I'm betting if people aren't already off of work, they'll be leaving early. 11 am is probably about the only time you could expect to get through Atlanta without bad traffic somewhere.

it's already started. I was driving north of Atlanta from the Chattanooga area to Adairsville on my way to Rome this afternoon and Georgia state troopers were every few miles using laser radar. They had people pulled over several times along the way as well. Traffic was heavy also so expect to have to drive 5 MPH over max and heavy traffic and allow extra time. It's the worst I've seen the state troopers in years.
They have a new hiding spot near where I live and have been wearing it out all week. There is a long hill with a left curve at the bottom and they have been set up in the curve next to a bridge overpass hid in the tall grass since no one has bothered to mow the right-of-way so far this year. You are right on top of them (especially if you're in the fast lane) before you have a clue they are there but they can shoot you with the laser way before you can see them. Needless to say they have had cars pulled over left and right all week from this one spot. Drive safe this weekend.
My bet is you will have a nice trip until you get to Atlanta. Or at least about 50 miles out from Atlanta. As for the fuzz, old term from my day, just keep it reasonable and sober. You will have no problem.
the traffic was fine, btw.... almost nothing 'til we entered the city limits
and the cops were extremely thin as well.... we saw more pigs on a 15 mile stretch on 459 than we did for a 140 on I-20..... very gracious weekend indeed
