KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Count rapper Lil Wayne among the fans of Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin and his big mouth.
His new "Banned from TV" song includes the lyric, "Talk (expletive) like Lane Kiffin."
"We're Lil Wayne fans," Kiffin said. "We played him a number of times out here before (during practice). Guess we're getting a little street cred."
The Volunteers coaches often play hip-hop and rap music during practice to motivate the players, and as one of rap's most popular artists, Lil Wayne is often heard among the selections.
"We all thought it was really cool ... and more kids will think Tennessee is back on the map now," linebacker LaMarcus Thompson said.
The first-year coach famously promised a win over Florida and accused Gators coach Urban Meyer of cheating during recruiting. The Southeastern Conference reprimanded Kiffin for a second time on Monday after he openly criticized league officials, warning the coach he was facing suspension should he run his mouth again.
Kiffin has a reason for saying the things he does: He's trying to bring some much-needed attention to a Tennessee program that was dropping off the national football scene before he was hired in December.
And a little pop culture cred from Lil Wayne won't hurt either, he said.
"You're dealing with kids in the age frame, you know we're dealing all the way from eighth graders to seniors in high school, so the more we're out there the better. It's good," he said.
Running back David Oku thinks the reference is appropriate too.
"That's a good thing," Oku said of the song. "Coach Kiffin does talk a lot of smack, but he's backing it up though."
