Default BB eligiblity issue?
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin says the NCAA is investigating an eligibility issue with freshman tailback Bryce Brown.

Kiffin says that the investigation has nothing to do with Brown's recruitment by Tennessee or any other school. Kiffin would not say Tuesday specifically what the NCAA was investigating, but said that Brown had good grades in high school and during the summer session at Tennessee.

Brown, from Wichita, Kan., was considered a top high school prospect in 2009. He has seen significant playing time with the Volunteer's first team offense during fall practice.

Any idea what this might be about ?

I'm sure he'll be fine. This kind of navel gazing was bound to happen when you have an "adviser" though. You're setting yourself up for scrutiny. I'll bet if he went to So Cal you would never hear anything about this.

Supposedly about money raised for a football camp he attended his soph. year in high school. We all know how the NCAA gets in no hurry with these things.

So will he be able to play the first game since this is an eligibility problem ?

Who knows...with the NCAA's history of dragging things out this may go on for awhile. Also, there is a group of players in question, just don't know exactly who. But, if the NCAA would ever want to make an example out of someone, you'd better bet it would be a player with a "handler"...

KNOXVILLE -- Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin says the NCAA is investigating an eligibility problem involving freshman tailback Bryce Brown.
At issue is Brown's amateur status as a high school athlete, a person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press. The NCAA is reviewing whether money was raised for Brown to visit colleges during his sophomore year. Tennessee was not recruiting Brown then, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

"I think it's a gigantic distraction. I think it's very unfortunate," Kiffin said in announcing the investigation after Tuesday's practice.

The investigation has nothing to do with Brown's recruitment by Tennessee or any other school or his grades, Kiffin said.

Brown was recruited out of Wichita, Kan., as one of the top high school prospects in 2009 and committed to the Volunteers after letting a scholarship offer from Miami expire.

He's spent significant time playing with the Vols' first team offense during fall camp, and Kiffin has repeatedly praised his progress.

"I think Bryce had a great last four practices before (Tuesday), capped off with a great scrimmage," Kiffin said. "He didn't have very many big holes when he was running. He made a lot out of a little, and he was extremely physical."

The investigation isn't keeping Brown from practicing with the Vols for now, though a minor hip injury has. Brown left practice on Monday after a special teams practice period, though an MRI of his hip on Tuesday morning was negative.

Brown didn't practice on Tuesday, but Kiffin said he thought the running back might be able to practice when Tennessee takes the field again on Thursday.

"He couldn't do anything (Tuesday). His hip was pretty tight," the coach said. "Hopefully (Thursday) we'll be able to get some stuff out of him."

All's quiet on the Eastern Front. I remember folks talking about him having a handler/agent/advisor before he ever committed anywhere; and some said then that it might be prove to be a problem later. I had no idea that's what the issue was that they're looking into... I'd have thought they would have cleared that up before he committed anywhere.

Well, if it goes anything like USC's situation, UT should know something about it in about 3 years; after the kid has played an entire career at UT... at such time, the NCAA will inform UT that they must vacate all 6 wins in which he participated over his 3-year career.
