Wow...the more things change, the more they stay the same. What an absolutely pitiful, gutless, and all too increasingly common performance by the Vols last night! WTF was that??
I'm sorry, but you Fulmer apologists out there and glass half full a$$holes stay the f*ck away from me today! This crap is getting REALLY old!! We just choked our season away to a CRAPPY and FAR less talented Pac-10 team. Losing to Cal last season was far more palatable... at least THAT team actually had some talent and weapons. We let a pitiful offense with no running game, no weapons at WR, and a joke of a QB move the ball at will when the game was on the line. Imagine what Florida, Auburn, and Georgia are going to do to us.
Uhhmmm...Dave Clawson... you were billed as being a good offensive minded coach. So much for that! Let's see....UCLA's strength lies in the DLine, so let's come up with a plan that includes a bevy of slow developing running plays between the tackles. Crompton is billed as being a good scrambling style QB so let's do NOTHING but 5 step drops and leave him in the pocket. I just don't understand at all! And no adjustments at halftime?? They looked like they had never seen a blitz before.
And Chavis...maybe it's time you hang it up as well! Kevin Craft throws 4 interceptions in the first half and is thoroughly horrible, but the Vols defense and coaches in all of their wisdom are still going to play it like Tom Brady's under center. Hmmm....you've got a young QB who's obviously rattled and lacking any confidence so let's just lay back and hope he continues to throw it to us...pure genius! 3rd and 6??? Make sure the corners give the WRs at least a 15 to 20 yard cushion on the sidelines....that QB's got a cannon and he's been burning us all day! Absolutely embarrassing!!
And can Foster not just go hang out with the rest of the guys and get into trouble like all the rest of our criminals....uhhmm, errrr... players? How embarrassing is it going to be that he's going to be at the top of our school's career rushing list despite the fact that there's been very little memorable accomplished during his tenure? Good thing for him that "Senior Leadership" at Tennessee does no longer include the prerequisite of sound fundamentals like protecting the football.
And finally to good ole Phil. Are we ever going to get to the point where you are pissed and embarrassed about how badly the guys on the other sideline are out-coaching and out-preparing their players? And are fundamentals even talked about at practice anymore? How many stupid turnovers, penalties, and bad decisions are we going to have to endure before something changes? I mean, I'm just curious because it's getting VERY old.
Obviously I'm just a little bent! I suppose there are a few positives to build on from last night, but there's just NO WAY IN HELL you consider yourself a "major program" and lose a game and to a team like that! No Way!! Those fellow Vols fans who diluted themselves into thinking last season's SEC East championship actually meant anything and was a positive sign of things to come now have another 18 days to do more of the same before reality comes punching you in the face in the forms of Hurricanes Meyer and Tuberville. When does basketball season start??
LOL. I love posts like these. It really reminds me of "TigerJunkie420" after we lost to South Florida.
Yes, I'm disappointed in the outcome of last night's game, because UT could've won the game, but mistakes cost us dear against a under rated UCLA team. USC should be put on notice the team in West Wood is back. Norm Chow is one the best Offensive Coordinators in the Nation and he torched UT with the short passing game. This new offensive system will take time to get on track, so be patient.
don't fool yourself on the "USC should be put on notice the team in West Wood is back"
you guys played a medium team ....and not only that but a medium team that is playing w/its 3rd string QB and a medium team that lost 3 starters in the 1st half to injuries

Craft couldn't thread the ball in the cover-2 space, so Chow turned to the short passing game.
Why didn't UT's DC similarly adjust?
Another thing I didn't like, and many might disagree with me, is that when it mattered, in OT, they went away from the spread....sweep in I-twins to the boundary???? These kids have been practicing the new offense all spring and summer...why go away from the gameplan when it mattered most?

When things get tight, Fulmer goes conservative. Always.
Of course, so did UCLA, going to a 3 man front on UTs last drive in regulation, even though it was the constant pressure that was keeping Crompton rattled.

I agree that UCLA is no where near USC right now and we did play a mediocre squad with significant injuries. However, USC better watch out(not this year but in the future) because Neuheisel and Chow are great coaches and recruiters. I see this win over UT as a turning point in this program. Look for them to compete for top recruits in the California area and compete with USC and the Pac 10 title for years to come.

True, UT didn't adjust on Defense, don't know why. Clawson first game as Offensive Coordinator showed on the field. I think he should've ran the ball on UCLA more.

Norm Chow is probably one of the best Offensive Coordinators in college football. UCLA probably won't beat USC this year, but with Chow's Offense recruits will be wanting to go UCLA. Yes, UT should've beat UCLA, because UT missed two field goals and Foster Fumbled in the red zone thats at least 9 points left on the field. Also, Crompton just didn't look comfortable in pocket partly due to UCLA getting pressure and him pressing a bit. I'm sure Fulmer, Clawson and Chavez would have done some things differently if they could, but the game is over and there are eleven more games to play and you want your teams attitude to be take one game at a time

Damn, dude....give me some of whatever it is you're drinking!
We've been down this road FAR too many times in recent years. I had come to terms with getting my heart and season crushed after the Gator game, but hell...we can't even make it to THAT game anymore.
Losing to Cal last year was one thing, but UCLA is TERRIBLE!! We had ZERO business being in a contest with that team...much less losing to them. UCLA will struggle to finish .500 this season...and we LOST to them!!
Patience is great and it will take some time for the offense to gel, but it's not like Tennessee is unique in this venture. We should beat garbage teams like UCLA with blindfolds on. Auburn's instituting a new system, played like crap on offense, and still won 34-0. Good teams with superior athletes find a way to beat garbage teams while they're getting their ducks in a row.
No offense, but I'm tired of all the damn excuses and being irrelevant by the time October rolls around!!
Phyllis-But it is a big deal. You almost killed Stanley. Dwight-Yeah right! I filled him full of butter and sugar for 50 years and forced him not to exercise!
All those reasons you guys listed for UT losing? Wrong. All of it wrong. I'll tell you what happened.
It's all about me. That's right, me.
The Vols NEVER do what I want them to do. EVER. When I need a win out of 'em? Choke. When I need them to lose? Three kickers miss three field goals.
In all seriousness, I know UT's coaching and gameplan were suspect in the 2nd half, but the Bruins looked a lot better than I thought they would. I think they have to hang that win on Chow.
Don't worry Vol fans. UT will screw me over several more times this year by winning. Probably in Athens.

The thing is, Fulmer will turn it around before mid-season and all will be forgotten. Seems like this love/hate relationship with Fulmer is just a regular thing the last couple of years.
I think many Vol fans love what Fulmer does in the recruiting arena, but most Vol fans realize and acknowledge that he is somewhat lacking with the Xs and Os. When the Vols go up against teams with better coaches like Florida, Georgia, and Penn St. it is obvious the effect of coaching has on the game and it is usually a detriment to us. Rick Neuheisel and Chow can join the club of coaches better than Fulmer that have beat us.
Usually our superior talent can overcome these deficiencies. In close games against coaches like Urban Meyer, Mark Richt, Joe Paterno, Nick Saban, Rick Neuheisel etc. . . it usually goes the other way especially when it comes to halftime adjustments or in our case lack thereof. I add Paterno in this list because we have lost to them in three bowl games although I think Johnny Majors was the coach for the first one.
Anyways, with the recent additions of Petrino, Saban, Miles, Meyer, and Spurrier in the conference it will be difficult for us to keep up even if we continue to recruit well. I hope that Fulmer and Clawson can turn this around and use this loss as motivation.
