Fulmer e-mails regret to Vols fans
Associated Press

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --
Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer's acknowledgment that the 2005 season was "unacceptable" has been put in writing to the fans.

Fulmer wrote a 300-word letter that was e-mailed Tuesday to about 38,000 season ticket holders and other fans signed up to receive periodic newsletters from the athletic department through its Web site.

"This year was a disappointing season for everyone in the Tennessee family," wrote Fulmer, echoing what he's been saying on the radio and television and in speeches. "We started this season with great expectations and failed to live up to those expectations.

"I assure you that no one is happy about our season -- especially me, and I know that our fans deserve better than what we produced this year."

The letter was gleaned from 10 pages of notes from a speech Fulmer gave Monday to the Knoxville Quarterback Club. That speech also expressed his concern over finishing 5-6, the first losing record and lack of a bowl bid since 1988.

"Coach Fulmer was trying to find a way to communicate to fans," athletic department spokeswoman Tiffany Carpenter said Tuesday.

Fulmer wrote that he is taking an audit of the program.

"We grossly underachieved offensively, and special teams were erratic at best," he said. "No stone will be left unturned and no question left unanswered as to what went wrong."

On Monday, Fulmer took one step in what he hopes will turn around the program by introducing David Cutcliffe as offensive coordinator to replace Randy Sanders. Cutcliffe was on Tennessee's staff with Fulmer for 17 years and was offensive coordinator from 1993-98 before leaving to be head coach at Mississippi. He was fired at the end of last season.

Fulmer also fired two assistants, receivers coach Pat Washington and offensive line coach Jimmy Ray Stephens. Sanders resigned on Oct. 31.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --
In case you didn't get a copy, I have one here.

Dear Vol Faithful,

As you all know, I have been busy for the last few days. First, I had to go down to the cemetery to stop General Neyland who has been spinning in his grave since those nasty folks from Georgia were up here in his house. We had hoped that win over Memphis would slow him down, but the loss to Vanderbilt seems to have kicked him into overdrive.

Second, I spent a good deal of time in court recently. I wanted to be sure that them Bammer folks got all shook up and took the hits they was supposed to take. Related to this, the NCAA was so happy with my undercover work that they asked me to try to dig up some dirt on Saddam Hussein and Scooter Libby. I am sure you are all proud that both of them fellas lost their jobs, too.

Third, I have been pretty busy down at the Knox County Jail visiting recruits and players. These boys are just so full of energy that they was bound to get into a little trouble once in a while. I was still worn out from helping Jesse Mahelona wash all them fire trucks. (I told that boy if he had to hit a vehicle in the future that I sure hoped he hit one of them Krispy Kreme trucks. They'd be a lot more fun to wash.)

'Bout the time that all of that stuff passed over, I realized we was six games into the season and I hadn't changed quarterbacks but ten times. I know how much y'all like me changing the boys out on the field, but you do have to remember that we let Brent go last year, so we didn't have him around to put in the line up. I was afraid that with Noel Mazzone using as many QB's as he used down in Oxford, that some of you folks would leave us to be Rebel fans. That's why I fired Randy. I never was sure what he did anyway.

When I was talking to Randy before I fired him, he told me that he had been using the playbook that David Cutcliffe left behind a few years back. I didn't realize we even had a playbook, all I ever did during games was change quarterbacks from time to time and make sure that Jesse wasn't eyeing any of them trucks that carry the TV cameras around...I sure wouldn't want to be washing them this time next year. Anyway, Randy told me that he was using the same playbook, but over the years some of the little X's and O's had worn off, so he just took out them pages. Turns out that our playbook is now about the size of the bulletin at the First Baptist Church in Smyrna. And before you ask, I checked and it would appear that Randy scribbled a prayer or two in the margins over the last few years.

I started writing this to apologize to you folks, but I ain't really sure what I done wrong. I didn't do anything different this year than what I've been doing the last ten years. Okay, I ate a few more helpings of mashed potatoes during Thanksgiving, but they was good and I like them mashed potatoes. The boys that I bring to Knoxville ain't no worse than they've been, although I think they're a little stupider. In fact, I guess that's what I want to apologize for. Back in the day, we was bringing in boys who was every bit as bad as these fellas, but they was smart enough not to get caught.

So, I pledge to the Volunteer Nation that I will never again recruit a player who is so stupid that he gets caught breaking the law or fighting a fire truck. As a part of this pledge I also going to bring back David Cutcliffe, because he is still using the old playbook and we won't have to get a new one that way.

As a final note, during my undercover work with the NCAA last year, I stuck into Archie and Olivia's bedroom. Using a powerful sleeping gas and undercover of darkness, I extracted sperm and egg samples from them. These sperm and eggs have been used for invitro fertilization of twelve Volunteer Cheerleaders, guaranteeing an endless supply of Mannings for me and Coach Cutliffe.
The unexamined life is not worth living.

Wow, Rebel. The First Baptist Church of Smyrna is right down the street from me! Even though your inclusion of our little town in your post is odd considering the fact that we are more than a 2-hour drive from Knoxville, I cannot tell you how proud we poor, dumb, country folk are to make one of your outrageously funny, brillant posts.
And by the way, that is a fabulous parody. I can't wait until you do your first one of Orgeron. Good luck with that guy, it looks like Ole Miss is finally headed in the right direction.

You must be kidding! Jealous of what? A 5-6 year?, more arrests than wins?, recycling old coaches? Yea, I am green with envy. RTR

I doubt very seriously that he meant Bama. Perhaps, Ole Miss would be a bit more reasonable.

Ask Rebel, it appears that he knows much more about it than I do. It is one hell of a commute, but if the spirit moves him...

Jelous of the fact that a 5-6 team with crappy offensive coaching and execustion only lost to the great were back Bama by only 3 points and has more to look foward next year than any team in the SEC.

Did you and Rebel Drummer have the same English teacher? You are right however, when you are 9th in a 12 team conference, there are few other places to go than up the ladder. RTR

This from the Revelation of Saint Phil which somehow got left out of the Bible...go figure.

I saw a great ship of blue and red,
And on it mast was an angel of fierce visage.
He opened his mouth and spewed forth
Carnage upon quarterbacks and coordinators.

The faithful turned away for he was very like the reptiles,
Seen last in a far kingdom usurped by the Lesser Pellinis.
But this Lizard King knew their language
And with it beguiled their young men.

And the ship sailed as upon wings of fire,
Visiting houses great and low.
Ever did the Lizard King growl and snarl,
Which brought delight to the young men of the Missip.

Still fearsome, on sailed the ship,
Demons with giant tusks did battle the ship.
Although they turned back the Lizard King,
They were never again the same.

Still forward drove the King,
Facing the backwards foes of Ark and Stark.
Leaving in defeat each time
But bellowing loud still for all to hear.

Then I was taken to where the sun had set,
And I saw there the General of the Lizard King.
He spoke not, but smiled and turned away,
With him went the weak, those who had called for mercy.

I looked to the Archangel who guided my journey
And asked where sat the Lizard King.
He waved his hand and showed to me a scroll,
Covering the scroll were the names of young warriors.

Here and here and there and there sits the Lizard King.
Know you not that he is on a quest?
His lizardy, bellowing tongue that we hear in battle,
Becomes a soothing song in young warrior's homes.

He fought with the weapons of the Caroller,
But knew that his warrior princes were to few to carry them.
So, he seeks others who will embrace the challenge
To rebuild the fortunes of the Red and Blue.
The unexamined life is not worth living.

The guy finishes 3-8 in his inaugural season and gets a poem written for him, talk about a man crush. What will you do if he ever gets the Rebs to .500? Send a card and flowers, chocolates?
Anyway Reb, I gotta hand it to you. Though the tone is shockingly optimistic, that is one hell of a poem. Do tell, was it extempore or have you spent most of the football season crafting this fine work?

I found Fernando waiting
Wallowing in the edge of reason.
Around him grew the tendrils
Of madness and insanity.

I found Fernando waiting
Wailing with hapless Vollies.
Who walked to the General's home
With their shapeless, formless king.

I found Fernando waiting,
Watching with the silly hill folk,
Whose Godot was never seen
Or heard from ever again.

I found Fernando waiting,
Wondering how he lost his way
In Smyrna's town square
While searching for the bulletin.

I found Fernando waiting
Wallowing
Wailing
Watching
Wondering

I found Fernando
Extemporaneously, not laboriously
The unexamined life is not worth living.
