Default Spurrier: "I'm nowhere near retiring"
Saw this posted on Cockytalk and thought I'd bring it here...

Steve Spurrier tells Georgia’s top QB prospect he is nowhere near retirement | College Football Recruiting

Quote:
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier told Georgia’s top quarterback prospect he is “nowhere near retiring” from the Gamecocks.

Flowery Branch quarterback Connor Shaw spent around 30 minutes with Spurrier during South Carolina’s Junior Day on Saturday. One of the first things they talked about was Spurrier’s future with the Gamecocks.

“I always hear these rumors, just like everybody else, that Coach Spurrier is going to retire in two years, so I asked him about it,” Shaw said. “He [Spurrier] told me ’I'm definitely staying until we accomplish more things at South Carolina … [and] I’m nowhere near retiring.’”

Shaw, the younger brother of Georgia Tech quarterback Jaybo Shaw, is one of the state’s top 2010 prospects and has early offers from South Carolina, Tech, Stanford, West Virginia and Wake Forest.

With Spurrier, rumors about his impending retirement are constantly used against South Carolina on the recruiting trail. Even one of Spurrier’s former assistants, David Reaves, was accused of saying it to prospects after taking a job with Tennessee two months ago. However, Reaves later denied it, according to the Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier.

Shaw didn’t ask Spurrier the loaded question to be nosey. Shaw said South Carolina has a slight lead over Georgia Tech as his frontrunner, and he wanted assurances the man he considers his “childhood idol” will be around if he signs with the Gamecocks.

“That [Saturday] was the first time I really had the chance to sit down and talk with Coach Spurrier … it was a like a dream come true,” Shaw said. “Growing up, [Spurrier] was my idol when he was coaching at Florida. It’s still hard for me to believe that I have the opportunity to play for him.”

Spurrier pulled the prized prospect into his office and, during a lengthy conversation, let him take a peak at his Heisman trophy and many championship rings. Spurrier also let Shaw know that the admiration was mutual.

“South Carolina is bringing in a little more of shotgun offense with a zone read, and [Spurrier] said that I would pretty much be a perfect fit for that system. He said that I was the guy they wanted, and that was pretty cool hearing that from … one of college football’s greatest coaches.”

Shaw said he called his brother at Georgia Tech about the Spurrier experience. “Jaybo thought it was cool that I got some one-on-one time to talk with a legend.”

Let me throw a question out there for all you Gator fans that were around and followed the team closely while Spurrier was coach there. I can't think of a time where Spurrier has ever mislead this school, program, or fanbase. When he says anything, he really means it. I truly believe him when he says he's nowhere near retiring. I don't think he leaves until we atleast win the East.

So I ask you Gators, that should know as well as anyone: When he says this, do you guys really think he's dead serious and intends to be around til the job is done? Share with us your true feelings on the guy, and what he says.

In my opinion I think SOS will be there another 4 or 5 years. A lot of Gator fans took issue with the way SOS left Florida but I think most of that is sour grapes. I personally took more issue with him going to Washington than the actual NFL. But I think he has that reputation of being a straight shooter and have never heard anything that would conflict that whether he was at UF, in the NFL, or at USCe.

Agree. Spurrier may be disliked by some people for a variety of reasons (has run up the score on occasion, not afraid to speak his mind, etc.), but he has always been a man of his word. If he says he's nowhere near retiring, then he believes he's nowhere near retiring.

He started putting in some zone read plays this season but never ran any. I guess because we dont have the QB to run it yet. But yeah we have new offensive coaches thank god so we wont have the same stale offense.

I'm really excited to see what the offense looks like this year. Can't wait for Spring Ball. Hopefully we see some huge improvements from Garcia!

Spurrier is a straight shooter. If he says he's not retiring in the foreseeable future, then he's not. He's a strong competitor who would rather win than anything. He wants to put the Gamecocks into the East SEC championship, at least, before he's finished. He may be able to do it.

I agree. For South Carolina to win the East a lot of things will have to happen. We're going to need Florida/UGA to have a down year. And we're going to have to get some breaks. Nearly every team does that wins the SEC. We're never going to reach the level that UF is at. There just isn't enough money/resources in our state to do that. But we can have a program that goes 8-4 every year and has a 10-2 year every five or six years. That's what I expect out of South Carolina.

People who think that the game has passed him by are wrong. Look at what his offense did in 2006. We were in the top 20 in the nation and in the top 3 in the SEC. If he can get us to that point again and if Ellis Johnson can maintain the defensive success we had last year then there's no reason we can't win the SEC East in the next 3-4 years.

I 100% agree. If we could only bring that 2006 offense back and pair it with the defense now.

Going to be fun watching a little bit of the spread with Giles in the backfield and also throw Gilmore back there in the gun.

I think he means what he says. He minces no words and tells it like it is, and you had better believe it! That is something to be treasured in your coach.

I get so tired of everyone each year saying this is it for SOS....the man isn't going anywhere and before he's done we will atleast play in the Dome for the SEC Champ.

While coaching the Gators, Spurrier never misled fans. He all but said he wanted to try his system out on the next level. Most fans, including myself, believed it would never happen. I was especially shocked considering the 2002 team was returning the Heisman runner-up...not to mention a bunch of really talented players. Spurrier hadn't recruited particularly well...but the 2002 team would've been good with him as coach. But to answer your question....if he says he's gonna be a USC for the foreseeable future...I believe him.

Now...I will admit, if I could go back and change things...I wouldn't. I like the way things have turned out...

But I must admit...I've lost a lot of respect for the OBC. Not in my wildest dreams would I have believed that he would be a turncoat. Not being disparaging to the OBC...but coaching against the Gators is blasphemy in my book.
