Auburn ESPN Game Day may not be back
[fpic]http://www.sectalk.com/boards/images/logos/South_Carolina.gif[/fpic]Corso jabs may scare off ESPN.

By: Seth Emerson
The State | Homepage

If ESPN’s “GameDay” returns to Columbia, and that appears to be a big if, it would make for good theater.

When South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier called out announcer Chris Fowler on Tuesday for misquoting him, it was the latest salvo in what has been an occasional feud since Spurrier was hired three years ago.

Now the South Carolina athletics department is trying to have some fun at the expense of ESPN analyst Lee Corso. But Corso and Fowler do not appear amused.

Fowler expressed concern that USC has started a Web site called letsshowcorso.com, where fans can “throw” footballs at a likeness of Corso. Gamecock fans have been mad at Corso since the former coach declared Spurrier never would win an SEC title at South Carolina, “even if he coaches here 400 years.”

Corso declined to comment on the Web site, although he said Saturday on the air he would not “dignify it with a response.”

Fowler, the lead announcer on “GameDay,” backed his broadcast partner.

“I’m a little puzzled (about) the approach (of) marketing the team by attacking Lee,” Fowler said. “I don’t speak for him at all. But I think (Corso’s) reaction to the campaign was pretty evident if you saw the show.”

The issue could have an impact on whether “GameDay” returns to Columbia. Fowler wanted to make clear the show has had good experiences here. “Gameday” has originated from Columbia four times: in 2001 (vs. Florida), 2004 (Georgia), 2005 (Central Florida) and 2006 (Tennessee).

“I don’t speak for what that would mean for the likelihood of ‘GameDay’ coming there. But I can tell you it doesn’t increase the chances,” Fowler said. “If South Carolina continues to win games, it will always be on the radar for game shows. But it would be a consideration, to go somewhere the show has been targeted.”

USC athletics director Eric Hyman said the jabbing at Corso was meant in good fun. Since the Web site went up less than two weeks ago, it has received more than 300,000 hits, and Hyman said about 25,000 have tossed a virtual football at Corso.

The school will show a new video during Saturday night’s game against South Carolina State. Hyman said it would provide “balance” but did not provide more specifics. A marketing and fundraising video that included clips of Corso was played before the Louisiana-Lafayette game.

“Did South Carolina, when (Corso) made some of the comments he made, did we return it?” Hyman said. “It’s fun, it’s an enjoyment.”

Hyman said he did not talk with ESPN before putting up the site, and he hasn’t since. It was conceived and created by USC and an outside marketing company that Hyman said included USC alums and members of the Gamecock Club.

The Web site features video of Corso making his declaration two years ago, during a “Game Day” broadcast in Columbia, that Spurrier would not be able to recruit well enough at South Carolina to beat certain teams. As Corso mentions Tennessee, Florida and Clemson, video is shown of USC beating each team the past two years.

The site does not generate money, as it is free and does not include advertisements, but it is part of the athletics department’s fundraising campaign..

“We’ve already shown Corso we can beat Tennessee, Florida, Arkansas and a lot of other good teams,” Spurrier says on the site. “We’ve already shown Corso we can recruit, No. 4 in the nation by ESPN.com. Now let’s show we can build the facilities that are necessary. Let’s show my pal Lee Corso we can win the SEC championship.”

Spurrier also got in a dust-up with the “GameDay” crew over Saturday’s broadcast. He was peeved that Fowler misquoted him — which Fowler apologized for — and noted Corso and Kirk Herbstreit picked “a pretty lopsided” win for Georgia, according to Spurrier.

Fowler, who did not make a prediction on the game, called it “an impressive win” for the Gamecocks.

As for a potential return trip to Columbia, the Nov. 10 game against Florida looms as a possibility.

“We’ve always had really enjoyable experiences down there,” Fowler said. “But we won’t knowingly walk into a hate-fest.”

What does it say to recruits looking at USC if there are people on the biggest CFB broadcast in America flat-out saying that we have no chance in this league and we never will? If he can dish it out, he better be prepared to get it thrown back in his face. He demeaned our coach and our university. All this is well deserved IMHO.

Big friggin deal...you can't respond to every negative critism from the media

is gameday suppossed to say everyone's great and we're all NC contenders? corso may be wrong but at least he says what's on his mind. besides who cares what he says. if a recruit is that stupid to believe what a failed coach turned broadcaster says, then he's an idiot.

Probably like you whenever a poster criticizes LSU in some way or fashion.

You would do the exact same thing if you were in his position. He's taking up for his players and his team.

If you would have watched GameDay, they were predicting the most lop-sided scores in the history of USC football. I believe Herbstreit was the top of the list with a 42-3 prediction of the UGA/USC game. Given the history of the series, don't you think that's a touch much?

GameDay reaches MILLIONS of potential recruits every week and we don't need people like the motley crew at GameDay taking pot-shots at us on a regular basis. To critique is one thing, to bash and be obviously biased is another.

All he (Spurrier) did was set the record straight in regards to Fowler's incorrect quoting of Spurrier.

As for Corso, he made some comments without the benefit of intellect and now he's having to pay the piper. If he (Corso) doesn't like what we're doing/saying, then too bad. He shouldn't have shot from the hip taking jabs at both USC and Spurrier. Remember, GameDay started this war and we're gonna finish it.

am i a HC at a BCS program? if you don't know the difference then...well...i don't know what to tell you. I'm a biased homer and he's a well-respected coach in the best conference in America.

Heaven forbid a broadcaster pick another team to win...gasp. what freaking war? they picked another team to win and SS proved them wrong. SS should be the bigger man instead of a biased message board homer like us. I could care less who they pick because who the hell are they? you guys are the most sensitive fans on the universe. Gameday is for the kids on campus. personally, i could careless if they ever come to BR again but i'm not a 20 year college student.

not really...i would tear my coach up if he took gameday away from our kids. i'm too lazy and apathetic to get out there but they looked like they were having a GREAT time. people take waaaaaaay too much into what ESPN says.

These guys need to grow up. What a bunch of sissy cry babies. Hate fest? Corso and Fowler are just part of the castration of American men in this ridiculous time of political correctness. These guys aren't even real men whining about something like this. I think maybe they are too full of themselves. Thought this was college football. They take themselves way too seriously. Think I won't be watching game day anymore. Now every time I see them I will think of them as little pansy crybabies and I no longer care what they have to say. Grow up guys. At least pretend to be men!!

i couldn't agree more. with today's marketing media/internet, espn still thinks what they say is as if God himself said it.

I couldn't agree more, but if schools didn't allow idiots who can make the minimum grades then all of our football rosters would be losing some players. In general, seventeen and eighteen year olds are incredibly gullible and image conscious....hearing ESPN commentators say we won't win a conference championship in 400 years does hurt with some of those kids. Obviously Corso is just playing a character for entertainment, but there's really no hatred against him from the universities perspective, though they'd certainly prefer his take to have been less hyperbolic.

Some fans take it too seriously, but most know it's not real. The athletic dept. is just trying to have some fun with it, get some attention (it's working), and in the process raise tons of dough for our stadium expansion. Someone mocks you and you mock them back. What's the big deal?

As for Spurrier getting annoyed with Fowler, who wouldn't be annoyed when your words get misconstrued with a large number of people watching. Fowler apologized, and I'm sure Spurrier would say as long as it doesn't happen again everything's fine.

that is classic SS...always working the angles

personally, i would love if the talking heads at espn doubted us. fires up our players with bulliten board material. i wish they had gameday when i was a more eager college student. now...i can do w/o it quite fine. right now i think LSU is getting too much hype..i'd rather be low key but not 2004 Auburn low key.

The real question is "Why would Corso need to make such a statement anyway?" He was and is a good friend of Lou Holtz and since things did not turn out right for him, he makes a stupid statement like this. This was completly uncalled for and he should have to suffer any consequences that come his way. Corso is an IDIOT!

Why not us?? South Carolina, 2010 SEC EAST CHAMPIONS!
