Blake's Power Rankings- Week 2
Ranking the SEC

By: Blake
SECTalk.com News Writer

Week 2 brought some drastic changes to these rankings. While I'm still in a daze over AU's loss, the UGA loss was also strange considering their performance last week. Anyway, on to the rankings.

UP-1.
LSU looked like the #1 team in the nation last night. VaTech lost the game from the first snap thanks to a ferocious Death Valley crowd. I'm now pretty much terrified of our meeting with LSU, and the health of Brandon Cox following that game.

UP-2.
Florida once again came out the gates scoring, and put up great numbers. They did let Troy sneak up a little, but the win was convincing. IMO, Florida and LSU are in a league of their own as of right now.

UP-3.
Arky didn't play, but they do take on Bama this coming weekend. This game is usually a make-or-break type game for both teams, and I expect it to be a high-scoring affair with Arky squeaking out a close one in the 4th quarter.

UP-4.
Color me impressed. Not only did I expect USCjr to lose, I expected UGA to easily cover the spread. Spurrier is the best game-planning coach in the SEC, and it showed last night.

UP-5.
Bama had a slow start, due mostly to arguably the worst start in JPW's career, but got the job done at Vandy. The D-Line looked non-existent, but the RB's looked great. Grant is going to be a big name in the SEC for the next few years.

UP-6.
Kentucky showed that they will be putting up some major points this year with Woodson. Something tells me they will be upsetting more than 1 SEC powerhouse this season.

DOWN-7.
UGA looked amazing versus OK State, but apparently that drive to dominate only lasted for one week. Spurrier out-coached the Dawgs and the SC defense stuffed UGA at almost every opportunity.

UP-8.
While I didn't even get to watch the highlights of this game, it appears as though Tenn. used this game to bounce back and learn some things about their team.

DOWN-9.
Oh Brandon Cox.. this could be a long year for AU fans. Tuberville has already announced that he will stick with Brandon, and we take on Mississippi State next week. Unfortunately for Tubs, stubborn coaches under scrutiny tend to do poorly versus Croom.

10.
Vandy gave it their all, but the QB play was weak at best. A couple penalties really changed the momentum Vandy was building, and Bama rolled to an easy W.

UP-11. Mississippi State
An impressive performance versus Tulane. Worthy of moving up a spot as the Bulldogs head to Auburn to pick off 5 Brandon Cox passes.

DOWN-12. Ole Miss
The loss to Missouri was expected, but the Rebels D gave up big points quick.

Very nice, Blake! Great comments. Color me impressed... now that is a great line! Too, I think we were all impressed by Darth Visor's owning of Mark Richt. Sorry for your Barners. If Bobby Lowder doesn't fire Tubby, ya'll will definitely be back.

LSU may be in a league of their own but Florida will look alot more human after a few SEC games.
I'm going to wait and see how our D does against a very good Tennessee offense. If I see good things from our D against UT (and a win) then I will entertain the possibility of us defending our SEC title.
All I can say is that no matter what happens it will be alot of fun watching our offense this year.

Oh and once again Blake, you did a good job with this list. +rep

Good write-up. I agreed with everything but this:

Quote:
The D-Line looked non-existent
If the D-Line was "non-existent" How did Gilberry become one of the SEC's outstanding performers?

E WALLACE GILBERRY (Alabama) -- Recorded four solo tackles, with one for a loss, a forced fumble and four QB hurries against Vanderbilt.

I've been thinking about this since Saturday. Though I agree with you that UT has a great offense, for the game against Cal, do you think it was the Cal Defense that was bad or the UT defense that was so good?

I've revisted my thought of the UT offense being good because Ainge is a great QB and with the OC they have, they can do wonders with that offense. But if you look at the Cal Defense and what they did this past week, they gave up nearly 450 yards to Colorado State (157 rush, 301 pass).

Well its one game at a time for me. Up to this point UT's defense and offense will be the best we have faced this year. And it could be the best we face up until the LSU game...unless Auburn turns a 180 real quick.

Thanks to everyone who enjoyed it.

usaf- Gilberry had a decent game but he was the only Bama d-linemen I noticed getting any pressure on the QB. I watched 90% of the game since it was on LF, and the pocket was held for several seconds on nearly every Vandy snap. Just calling it like I saw it, Bama looked very impressive at the LB and DB positions.

I don't think our DL is in the top half of the SEC(mostly due to depth, not starters), but I thought Washington and Greenwood both played pretty well. I just rewatched the game yesterday paying special attention to the line of scrimmage and noticed Washington was occupying 2 OL and still making tackles. Greenwood got into the backfield on several occasions. The thing you have to understand with this D is that the DL is just taking up gaps. It is the LB's job to get pressure as a general rule. I thought they did a decent job at it. Decent, not great. I definitely don't think it was a lackluster performance by any stretch of the imagination.

I do have to agree, "non-existant" doesnt really describe the D-line, while they are no LSU, the did have a descent game against the most experienced O-line in the conference. GilBerry wasnt the only one, he was the standout, but Zeke, Washington and Greenwood all had good games and showed improvement. Other than that, thanks Blake, great job.

I just took the total of 9 QB pressures and only 1 sack (by Greenwood) as disappointing.

QB throws for +300 and RB runs for +200! Ole Miss is not the worst team in this conference! 1-1 with a tough 38-25 loss to a Damn good Mizzou team. I'm afraid your Tigers might be the worst right now Blake
