Default Deepest-ever Offshore Platform Installed in Gulf
The Independence Hub production platform has been installed in the Gulf of Mexico in more than 8,000 feet of water, the deepest rig ever installed. The platform, about 150 miles southeast of Venice, Louisiana, can handle up to 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. That's a 10% increase in current natural gas deliveries and enough energy to meet the needs of nearly 11,000 houses for a year. Production is expected to start around the middle of this year.

Hope it doesn't affect water levels off the coast. If you remove oil and gas, soil settles in to fill the cavity. Louisiana coastal cities can't afford to be any lower in relation to sea level. Venice will be earning its name if they aren't careful. I'd think 150 miles would be sufficiently off-shore, but I'm no expert on this topic. You'd think after Katrina, they'd err on the side of caution, though.

They probably have a contigency plan set in place to counter that. Of course, Venice, Louisiana may just want to be like Venice, Italy which I believe is may be completely submerged by the end of the century. It is going under at about an inch a year.

I would love to see two or three more of them out there. Until we can come up with an alternate source of energy, the less we have to depend upon Middle East the better.
