Default Boston Globe Criticizes Some SEC Teams
Boston Globe criticizes LSU & other SEC teams over graduation rate...
The low graduation rate for black LSU football players has drawn a complaint from The Boston Globe. Derrick Z. Jackson, a Globe columnist, put the Tigers in his annual "Bowl disqualification" list, after noting that NCAA records show while 73% of white football players earned degrees from LSU, only 37% of black players graduated. Jackson honored schools with graduation rates of more than 50% for both black and white players, and a racial gap of less than 15%. Other schools had similar or worse disparities: Arkansas graduated 85% of its white players, but 38% of the black players; Georgia graduated 72% of its white players and 24% of its black players; and Ohio State had a white graduation rate of 85% and a black graduation rate of 32%. Not to sound mean or anything but isn't it the STUDENTS responsibility to make sure they earn a degree? I doubt that any of these colleges are holding back or preventing anyone from earning a degree. Sound to me like the Boston Globe is trying to stir up some kind of racial trouble here.

Some coaches will tell you that it is their responsibility to make sure that their players go to class and get a degree. However, Les Miles doesn't care if his players go to class, at least he didn't at Oklahoma State.

Its true, it IS the student's responsibility and choice if they want to pursue education after being drafted. I also noticed about that article, how come it only mentioned white and black students? There are obviously more than just 2 races in the world. It seems the Boston Globe just wants a reason to raise up a race issue with teams that shouldn't even be there.

Key word "Boston" Globe. I wouldnt expect them to be printing anything positive about the SEC. Im suprised a sports writer in boston is even talking about College Football. I thought all they cared about was the SOX, Pats, Celtics, Bruins etc.
BTW... Did anyone catch sports center this morning. Tom Brady has been running his mouth about Florida jumping Meechegan to the Title game. I used to like Tom Brady too. Oh well, I guess you could expect that from a former Mich QB.

It actually is an issue, and the Boston Globe is not the first person to raise it. The disparity is probably more reflective on high school educations as well as culture in general. Perhaps if Hispanic, Asian-American, or whoever actualy made up more than less than 1% of the football playing population, then they can question the other races.

Man, come on. If it was Michigan in the title game, Florida fans, and hopefully former Gators, would be all up in arms. The guy played for Michigan for crying out loud. I'd have less respect for him if he DIDN'T stick up for his team.

And Ed Orgeron doesn't even know where the classes are held.

That might be, but, in general, he makes sure his players get there or they don't play. Former Ole Miss LB Eddie Strong who managed to get a degree is in charge of making sure players get to class. Not a dude I want to mess with.

There's a reason our second best DT sat out the second half of the season. Well two reasons, the initial reason was not going to classes atleast.

Aren't these graduation numbers based on like the mid to late 90's? I know the initial APR released like a year ago were.

The NCAA graduation report covers athletes who enter school in the academic years 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, and 1999-2000, with six years to graduate.

Auburn had the 3rd highest APR of any school and I do believe the highest APR of any public school.

Actually, I think that crayon access is all that is required.
