By: Ron Colquitt
Mobile Register

At least 34 people were arrested on DUI charges in Mobile County during Memorial Day weekend, including a linebacker on the University of South Carolina football team who had been a Mobile Register Defensive Player of the Year, Mobile County Metro Jail records show.

Dustin Lindsey, 19, a 2004 graduate of Davidson High School, was arrested early Saturday by a Mobile police officer. Jail records show that he was released on $1,000 bail.

Lindsey was one of 12 people arrested in Mobile County Saturday on DUI charges during the holiday that began Friday evening and ended at midnight Monday. Metro Jail records show that six people were arrested Friday on DUI charges, 15 Sunday, and one had been booked into Metro Jail on a DUI charge as of 3 p.m. Monday.

Baldwin County Corrections Center records show that two people were arrested Friday in Baldwin County on DUI charges. Three were arrested Sunday and, as of 3 p.m. Monday, one person had been arrested on a DUI charge in that county.

Prior to the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend, law enforcement officers announced they would be cracking down on drunken drivers and seat belt and child restraint violations during random traffic stops.

On Friday, Mobile police made three DUI arrests, Bayou La Batre police made an arrest, Saraland police made one arrest and Alabama State Troopers made an arrest.

Mobile police made nine DUI arrests Saturday, troopers made one, and Mobile County deputies made two DUI arrests.

There were 15 DUI arrests Sunday, the jail records show. Mobile police made 14 of those arrests and a Mobile County deputy made one.

Mobile police had made one DUI arrest as of 3 p.m. Monday, the jail records show.

Jail records show that Lindsey was booked into Metro Jail at 7:16 a.m. Saturday.

Dustin Lindsey and his twin brother, Jordin, are both linebackers at the University of South Carolina.

Dustin and his brother shared the honor of Mobile Register Defensive Player of the Year following their senior season at Davidson High School under the guidance of Coach Glenn Vickery.

As a senior at Davidson, Dustin Lindsey made 162 tackles, eight quarterback sacks and two interceptions.

He was one of three finalists for Defensive Lineman of the Year in Alabama.
