Michael Lee hit a three-pointer with 30 seconds left to put No. 2 Kansas up by five and the Jayhawks held on to beat No. 8 Kentucky 65-59 on Sunday in Rupp Arena.
After Lee’s three, Kentucky’s Robby Moss answered with a trey of his own—his second three in the critical moments—but Kansas (11-0) made its free-throws and held on for the six-point win.
Despite the absence of their best player, Wayne Simien—averaging 17 points and 12 rebounds per contest—the Jayhawks picked up the win in their first road game of the season.
The first 20 minutes of the game were played at a frantic pace, but neither team could muster many points. The Wildcats only hit 4 of their first 21 shots, but Kansas couldn’t take advantage and Kentucky (10-2) went into halftime with a 25-21 lead.
The Jayhawks came out roaring in the second half though, scoring 16 points in less than four minutes to start the second half and regained the lead at 37-33. It was back and forth after that, with both teams exhibiting more offense than they did in the first half.
Kansas, however, took charge in the last five minutes and held the lead for the majority of the time. Even when Kentucky would take the lead, the Jayhawks always found a way to answer.
Kansas found some offensive production from unlikely sources. Christian Moody, a walk-on from North Carolina, scored all 11 of his points and grabbed all six of his rebounds in the second half. Sasha Kaun also scored all seven of his points in the crucial second half.
For the game, Kansas had four players score in double-digits. Moody led the team with 11, but J.R. Giddens, Keith Langford and C.J. Giles all scored 10 for the Jayhawks. Senior guard Aaron Miles contributed 5 points and a game-high six assists.
Kelenna Azubuike led the Wildcats with 12 points and nine rebounds. Patrick Sparks and Bobby Perry added 10 points each for the Wildcats.
Kentucky suffered its second loss of the season—its other loss was to No. 3 North Carolina—and will look to rebound Wednesday night at home against a red-hot Vanderbilt team. |
