Everyone in that topic has good points. I'm new to the site but I think I know a thing or two about trash talk. Trash talking isn't just saying how you hate a team. The examples in the link above differentiate the difference.
Boasting is cool but going over board isn't trash talk. It's showing that you're a sore loser. Granted, when you win it's ok to boast about it. Just don't take it over board.
Show respect to the other fans of the Greatest Conference in NCAA Football (SEC for those of you that don't know). Respectful trash talk is much more entertaining than hate talk. It can be done, it's not hard.
Not only do you make yourself look stupid if you just say nonsense in your post. Trash talking consists of intelligent discussion. Trash talking isn't just talking bad about the other team. A lot of times just stating the stats and facts of a situation is the best smack talk you can do. Saying a team is going to get spanked but not backing it up makes you look stupid and other fans of that team dumb. You don't represent just yourself. When you act like an idiot wearing whatever jersey or sports apparel you're wearing, you are representing the entire fan population. Someone visiting from out of town seeing you act like an idiot just for a split second may very well be the only thing they see while in town.
That being said, just be respectful in your posts. Back up what you're saying with stats. It's ok to let personal opinion in but at least show that you know what you're talking about and not just posting to stir up trouble. A good opening post will bring a lot more intelligent discussion to come. A poor post will just have a ton of responses of people stating what an idiot you are and the point of the thread will be lost. If you want others to agree with you, back it up.
Last but not least, don't attack the person. If you have to result to attacking the person in your trash talking (IE: You [insert team] fans are morons) you've already shown you can't discuss things in a mature manner and no one will take you seriously. The second you do that, you've lost you're argument.
I will post more after some responses but I got most of it off my chest.
You just HAD to use Georgia fans in your example didn't you?
Actually, he was using UGA fans as the example of people who get bashed needlessly. He didn't say UGA fans were morons... he said people who say that as their idea of trash-talk are morons. That's what "I.E." and parentheses are for.
Plug in whatever team name you wish. I edited to say insert team name. I have a lot of friends that are GA fans and are some of the best people in the world. I enjoy watching football with them. And that's why it bugs me when people attack the fans rather than talking about the team and backing up their statement.
Don't get me wrong, I'll poke and prod and overstep a couple times but if I do, I will definitely apologize for doing so after the hype of winning a big game. I jumped all over a bunch of OSU fans on a poker forum one time when won the NC and took it a little too far. I apologized within the next few days because I was being obnoxious and did take it over board but they did say how they were going to kill us. I took $100 bets from like 15 people on there with no spread, just straight up and did an odds thing if FL won by more than 11. I ended up with around 2k because some of the people were pieces of sh!t and didn't pay up. I did not apologize to those people, just the true fans.
You have to give respect to get respect. That's the point of this topic. You can trash talk while still being respectful and not looking like an as..
