Tennessee Lane Kiffin: Can He Step Up Now and Take The SEC East In Meyer's Absence?
Lane Kiffin almost had three strikes against him coming into the job at Tennessee. First was his age and inexperience combined with his brash mouth, second was replacing a legend with a great lifetime winning percentage, Phillip Fulmer, and thirdly was having to play in Urban Meyer's conference at the height of his greatness.

Well, with a year under his belt and his mouth slipping a lot less, he's working on strike one, getting the Vols to a bowl game, and landing good recruiting classes to help with strike two and now strike three is gone of its own accord.

With Mark Richt is seeming limbo trying to get the Bulldogs back up to speed, could this be the break that Lane Kiffin needed to get the Vols back to the front of the SEC East a little quicker?

If he can come up with a quarterback to along with Bryce Brown and that defense, perhaps so.

Plus there's now the added bonus of Kiffin possibly attracting recruits who were looking at Florida but are now unsure.

This event of Meyer suddenly leaving throws the SEC East wide open.

Already there are articles stating that it's time for Mark Richt to put up or pack up. With Meyer leaving and Kiffin still building it should be Dog days ahead in the SEC East.

I think Tennessee is on it's way up but when they reach the top I'm not sure.

We're still a ways off, and secondly, who knows who will be the coach at UF?

You sure did write a lot of articles about Urban Meyer leaving.

Bob Stoops will take the Florida job, so there will be no drop off.

Especially considering it's only been 18 hours since it happened.

So you UT fans think you're just going to roll into Columbia and hand the Gamecocks a loss? We ain't gonna spot you 21 points this time, Vols. I could easily see a UT/USC or UT/UF (or USC/UF) tie for the East, with the head-to-head winner going to the SECC game.

Oh, more bleacher report!!

I think That Georgia will be better next year and that USC will be better and that Florida will still be pretty good. Tennessee should be better but as long as Kiffin keeps acting like a moron they will not climb on top of the East.

Auburn, MSU, and maybe Arkansas should benefit from the Meyer fiasco more than UT.

Kiffin acting like a moron has zero to do with whether we can compete for titles. The prospect of playing for the crown is a product of talent and depth which won't be at championship levels next season for us. We have a hell of a schedule too. I have no idea why people choose to point to things that don't matter and ignore things that do when discussing our chances.

It does matter Fernando, it undermines the whole essence of what you are trying to accomplish. You want to instill values and morals into the hearts and minds of these young men that will keep them out of jail and in class. The ultimate goal is for the players to succeed in what they do. You have to teach team unity and fundamentals. You can't have a guy running around telling lies and starting conspiracy theories and have the players buy into what it takes to win.

During the Auburn game there was a guy who was arguing with the coaches and there were the players who tried to commit armed robbery during the heart of the season. This kind of stuff is the direct result of players who can't believe what kiffin says and don't buy into the program. But then when you play the little thugs then your "program" is set up to reward that behavior. As long as there are good kids on the team and stealing punks there will not be enough team unity to win a title, depth or no depth.

I'd like to see which UT fans said that. I like the way our program is going but I've always been the one to believe that you have to win in the trenches to be an elite football team. Next year our O-line will be losing 4 starters and unless guys step in and become stars we are going to have to battle to get to the top of the East.

Did anybody even say anything remotely resembling that?

And they all got kicked off.
