One of the issues with that blog (and believe me there are many) is the idea that the fans can't say what they want to. They can do the chant all they want. They just won't hear the music they usually do it to anymore. Free speech is under no assault here. It's kind of like your right to hurl racial slurs at work. It is still protected by law but so is your boss' right to fire you for same. We can all take advantage of free speech but we must also deal with the repercussions of doing so.

The south will rise again - Now I don't attribute that to mean that The southern States will cede from the US rise again and etc. During the civil war the southern states were burned, buildings were destroyed and etc. Agriculture was the main industry and the south virtually missed out on the Industrial revolution. We have still not recovered in many areas economically. The once proud south was broken and embarassed.

Race issues are something that will get you banned faster than anything. It is outstanding that great work from civil rights leaders like Rosa Parks and MLK have helped to ease race relations and created a truely free land that we have today. I understand that some issues persist and I'm sorry for that.

The song in my opinnion is about the pride in our region. You can feel that Southern Pride at an SEC football game better than anywhere else. Athletics is second to none and the conservative sense of family, church, and state are unique and strike us at the core of our being in most cases. Yes the south has risen again, and the Civil War with all of its death and destruction has made us better.

I digress - The song can be taken in another context and in that sense is wrong. There was no reason to continue the chant and the whole deal has attracted exactly the wrong kind of attention. It was never worth having the KKK on campus. Good luck Ole Miss with this very sensitive issue.

I read about that earlier today........I guess freedom of speech/ singing doesn't exist in America anymore.

I'm definitely prejudice (potentially racist), and don't see how this would be offensive at all. The Ole Miss fans chanting "The South Will Rise Again" is the same as other schools' fans chanting "S-E-C" after a big win.
Nothing sinister there.
They sure as hell didn't help us, did they. That's completely off topic, and hasn't been discussed for weeks, but leave it to you to douche up a thread.

Mississippi was once the wealthiest state. Now we are one of the poorest. Most of the southern states have seen about the same trend. I've always taken the chant as us reaching prominence again. But some folks have to look for trouble, and that's what happened here.

Definitely. The students made their presence felt at the beginning of this whole ordeal. But once the Chancellor threatened to take the song away, the chant should have stopped. Classic case of immature punks who have never been told "no" in their lives, thinking they are bigger than the system. Everyone suffered because of those few idiot's ignorance.

Was someone's liberty threatened for the chant? Did I miss something here or is there a faulty definition of free speech in these parts?

Free speech doesn't even apply in the situation so it doesn't even matter.

That's the POINT of the thread, not 'students wanting free speech' it's this is stupid that they banned the chant.

Anyone with Southern Balls that doesn't have a bit of pride in the best part of the world should Nutt up or shut up.
