SEC players of the week

November 9, 2009 10:47 AM

The SEC league office has announced its top performers from Week 10:

OFFENSE

Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas: Completed 23 of 27 passes for 329 yards with no interceptions and also had a 1-yard rushing touchdown in the 33-16 win over South Carolina. His completion percentage of .852 set a school record (min. 20 attempts) and is tied for the fifth highest single-game performance in SEC history.

DEFENSE

Javier Arenas, CB, Alabama: Registered seven total tackles with two for loss and a quarterback pressure in the 24-15 win against LSU. Arenas is now tied for second in the SEC with 10.5 tackles for loss this season and is third on the team with 52 total tackles. Arenas leads all SEC defensive backs in tackles for loss.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Chas Henry, P, Florida: Punted four times for 211 yards and a season-best 52.8-yard average in the 27-3 win against Vanderbilt. He had three punts over 50 yards, including two of 58 yards, giving him six punts of 50-plus yards on the season. Vanderbilt’s 6-yard punt return in the first quarter was the first return allowed all season by Florida.

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN

Aaron Douglas, T, Tennessee: Made his sixth consecutive start at right tackle in the 56-28 win over Memphis. The Vols compiled 566 yards of total offense, including 429 passing on 38 attempts with just one sack, while holding the ball for more than 32 minutes in the game. The Vols are 4-2 since Douglas moved into the starting lineup.

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN

Montez Robinson, E, Georgia: Accounted for a career-high five total tackles, with 2.5 for loss, including two sacks, in the 38-0 shutout of Tennessee Tech. Robinson helped anchor a defense which held the Golden Eagles to just 55 total yards on offense, including minus-13 rushing yards, and piled up six sacks and 15 tackles for loss.

FRESHMAN

Morgan Newton, QB, Kentucky: Completed 20 of 29 passes for 187 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the 37-12 win over Eastern Kentucky. All passing numbers were career highs. Newton helped Kentucky generate 444 yards of total offense even though the Wildcats’ leading rusher and receiver did not play.

The LSU punter should have at least gotten an honorable mention. He had a HELL of a game.

Sig by Sabanocchio, a pretty decent guy for a Tennessee fan...
