I disagree. Just like in a court of law; if there are mitigating circumstances, of course you don't get absolved of guilt, but your punishment is reduced to reflect those outstanding circumstances.

Because Sabo asked how this situation was any different than Blount's... or didn't you read that part of the original post?

That you are is disappointing.
Oh yes he did, and that's why his punishment was only a half game instead of something far more serious. He's not making excuses for his actions; but there were reasons to consider when it was time to hand down his punishment.

Spikes issued a statement apologizing for what he did.

"I accept responsibility for my actions and I accept the consequences of my actions," he said. "I would like to apologize to my team and the coaching staff and Washaun Ealey. Football is a very physical and emotional game, but there is no excuse for my actions."

Meyer's wife mentioned Spikes' actions to him Sunday night, then defensive coordinator Charlie Strong did the same Monday morning. Meyer's said his first reaction was to move on. Then he saw a replay of the incident, which shows Spikes shoving his glove-covered right hand into Ealey's facemask and moving it back and forth.

Meyer then spoke to Spikes and determined he was retaliating after getting his helmet ripped off and eye poked earlier in the game. Meyer also talked to Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive, but Florida officials said it was Meyer's decision to suspend Spikes.

Look, we've been talking this to death all day. It's clear you didn't even watch the game or have done any research into this whole thing. Yours is just the same lame knee-jerk reaction to anything involving Florida or it's players.

For the record, Spikes was on the receiving end of more than one personal foul penalty by UGA players, 1 that was called, and 2 that weren't. Spikes needs to pay his dues for what he did; but a reasonable person also needs to consider that he took a lot of his own BS before he acted out. No excuse, just things to consider when meting out his punishment.

The half game suspension for the Vandy game is a joke. Why even bother to suspend him at all? This looks even worse now for the coach and the University. If you are not going to man up, just leave it alone.

Why not us?? South Carolina, 2010 SEC EAST CHAMPIONS!

Well, since it's such a common occurrence, then not only should Spikes be punished and kicked off the team, but the SEC should make an example and also punish the school to help prevent this from happening again. You don't poke somebody's eye.

You know what? I just gouged a guys eye out in the parking lot, and it felt great. I think everyone would calm down about this situation if they

A. Got their eye gouged out
or
B. Gouged someone else's eye out

So since Spikes was "retaliating" you feel things are alright then. His punishment shouldn't be that bad because he was provoked? That is the biggest BS argument I have ever heard.

But do yourself a favor, if it works for you start a career as a defense attorney. That way when someone pisses me off and "provokes" me and I put them in the hospital you can come get my charges dropped.

I guess that's the difference... there are some mitigating circumstances with Spikes. He doesn't get a free pass, because what he did went well beyond what was done to him. But, the fact remains that he was retaliating for some pretty bad actions against him.

There's no excuse for his actions, and he said as much in his apology. Still, he was a victim long before he became the victimizer. And, he went way overboard, imo.
Not to be a dick at all....I don't want you to think that.....but I didn't get to watch the game at all.....I saw some of the game...but I didn't see the eye poke or anything live....so I didn't see anything either that happened to Spikes....was any of these things seen during the game ?
Show class, have pride and display character. If you do, winning takes care of itself.

Are you having reading comprehension issues lately? This is the second time in the last few days you've quoted something as meaning something it clearly does not.

Your quote doesn't include anything from Spikes concerning retaliation. Like I said, Spikes doesn't mention anything at all about it. He admits his mistake like a man and doesn't make excuses for it. You, however, well there's really no explanation for the fact you are taking up for this or trying to excuse it in any way. Even GH says he is disgusted and embarrassed by it.

This really tops it all, GU. D^3 was completely right about you.
