McElroy attended high school at Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, Texas, playing under head coach Todd Dodge. During his sophomore and junior seasons, McElroy played behind Chase Daniel, who would later contend for the Heisman Trophy while playing for the Missouri Tigers.
In his first season as a starter in 2005, McElroy passed for 4,636 yards, 56 touchdowns, and nine interceptions en route to a 16–0 season, which included the Texas 5A state championship. For his efforts as a senior, McElroy was named the Texas 5A Player of the Year and an EA Sports All-American.
McElroy's 56 touchdown passes ranks first all-time in the Texas 5A classification, and second all-time in Texas high school football history, only behind Texas Tech's Graham Harrell's 67 touchdowns in 2003. His 4,646 yards passing currently ranks fifth all-time in Texas.
Good grief, you LSU fans talk more about Jefferson that UF fans do about Tebow. AND HE HAS WON A HEISMAN!! Give it a rest on the Jefferson talk please, at least until he does something worth any merit
You won't hear many UGA fans putting a lot of emphasis on Cox, we are confident in him yes, but he hasn't played enough to really know for sure he will be great. On a side note, Cox is a senior and Jefferson is a Sophomore. Which do you think would be the better leader?
This is one thing I won't ream Georgia fans for. They know they lost an all star in Stafford and don't expect Cox to be a heisman contender. They're comfortable in his abilities and realize that they only need him to be an effective JPW type guy to have a great season.
LSU fans: all you've seen of Jefferson is one good game. If you're defense gets back to form, he won't need to be the difference maker, so I'm not sure why you're all touting him as one. I happen to think he'll be great, but honestly, with the begining schedule, he's not going to get any respect until he has good games against Georgia and Florida.

Haha, Bama fans are the best example of writing checks they can't cash. But honestly, just like Georgia, Alabama fans aren't touting their inexperienced QB as an outstanding player, so I can't bash them for that. At least most of them know better than to brag about how he started behind Chase Daniel in high school...

I hate to tell you, but...
that sounds almost exactly like the stats on Jarrett Lee from Brenham, TX, and you know how that turned out.

Let's not get hostile. jk I agree that no one should tout their new QB's. But isn't that what UF did with Tebow, even while Leak was still a starter?
