| Ok the thing is, there more than one kind of coach. There's the kind like Saban...obsessive, cantankerous, moody, but brilliant. And then there's the kind like Miles...likeable, friendly, down to earth, GM style of coach. Both of the above have won NC's. They have similar records. Miles actually has a better winning pct. overall, and a much better bowl record. That article goes on to relate one of the coaches quoted in the story wanted to ask Saban a question, but was afraid to after Saban replied sarcastically to another coach. ![]() | ||

| That's the Saban we all love and hate. I think if the question were ask to these coaches, "Who would you want coaching your team in a bowl game?" the answer would definitely be the opposite. Saban is a good coach, but the guy consistantly chokes in bowl games. He honestly has some sort of "Saban Bowl Curse" on him or something. But at least from a emotional standpoint, Bama fans seems to be happy with this, so that's a good thing I guess. But I guess the lesson the little coaches learn from this is, don't ask Sir Saban a question unless you want a snarling sarcastic response. Funny stuff! | ||

| I thought this part pretty much describes the difference... College coaches must be master organizers, arranging practice schedules, recruiting trips, professional development and so on for the more than 100 people including players under them. They must be master salespeople, capable of convincing more than 20 seventeen-year-olds every year, along with parent(s) and other interested parties, that the school and program that the coach represents is the perfect place for them. They must monitor and assist in the academic development of nearly 100 18-22 year-olds. On top of all that, they have to be masters of the zone blitz, zone blocking, zone coverage, and zone reads. They must know how to call their own offense, run the defense, and talk in-depth about the benefits of the rugby punt versus the traditional punt, tackle twists and chipping on ends, play-action and shotgun, and be able to do it all under pressure. And speaking of pressure, they have 12 three-hour periods on Saturdays in the fall to prove that the rest of the year has not been wasted. And if they fail the test, there are 90,000 people sitting their watching it happen and all to eager to let them know about it. Viewed in this light, Saban has to be viewed as the better “football-man.” But Miles appears to excel in other, less visible but perhaps just as important parts of the job. However, it would be pure folly to accuse either of being a failure in the area that is not their respective strengths. Suffice it to say that the two are near the top of the college coaching heap at the moment, and the challenge for both is just to stay there. | ||

| Hope you aren't talking about me. I simply thought it was an interesting article that would be fun to discuss. Miles record speaks for itself. Although I think he has made some bonehead calls, you have to respect what he has done in his time at LSU. We all know his style is different than Saban's. I think Bama fans in particular like Saban because it has been such a long time since we had a coach who really took charge of this program. We haven't had much success with "nice guy" coaches in the past, so we equate that to weakness. | ||

Spot on. A "take no sh*t" attitude is what Bama needed. It's worked so far, and no one is complaining. | ||

| I will admit Saban is a great coach. But, I do get tired of him being such a jerk.He need to realize that answering questions from the media is part of his job. When I watch his press conf. I feel sorry for the guys who are questioning him. They ask simple questions and expect simple answers, not a smart ass comment that really has nothing to do with anything. | ||
