Default Tennessee, why do you want Lane Kiffin?
Just a question, why do you want Lane Kiffin as your head coach?

He's a 33 year old with a 5-15 record as a professional head coach. He spent 5 years as Southern Cal's WR's coach (like that job was hard), and then spent one season as their offensive coordinator before being hired as Al Davis' whipping boy.

Why do you want THIS guy as your head coach, personally, I think there are so many better options.

Kiffin is a legacy. He was raised by the best minds in football.

A win-lost record doesn't mean a damn thing until you're ready to retire.

1. Recruiting. He's one of the best recruiters in the nation and he is a National recruiter. Not to mention his contacts in California which could develop into a bigger pipeline there.
2. Pedigree. Yeah, I know it didn't get Alabama anywhere, but Kiffin actually has college coaching experience.
3. The MONSTER staff he is likely to bring in. Coach O is a certainty at DC at this point which bodes even better for recruiting. He will likely put together a very impressive offensive staff. The guy knows what it takes to be get it done offensively.
4. Player development. Just a few names for you to ponder: Mike Williams, Keary Colbert, Steve Smith, Dwayne Jarrett, Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, LenDale White...ect.
5. He would bring a pro-style offense with him, which fits our personnel and our current recruits perfectly.
6. He was better with the Raiders than they have been without him.

All that said, I am not completely sold on his ability to be a head coach at this level. But neither was UGA when they hired Richt, or Oklahoma when they hired Stoops so I think that is just a risk you have to take sometimes to get a real good guy who is an up and comer. He was new to the OC role too when promoted following the departure of Norm Chow, and all he did was help So Cal go 23-3 under his leadership.

and considering NFL and College are 2 different ball games... A guy like that can come from the NFL and be very succesfull in college and ofcourse like any other coach you could fall flat on your face!

The resurrected Vince Lombardi could coach at Oakland right now and he would struggle to get 3 wins in a season. That's not a knock on the head coach, it's a problem with the organization, mainly Al Davis. The greatest coach in the world won't be able to do a damned thing if the owner is also the GM and is tying your hands on what you can/cannot do.

Kiffin is a good coach, and the players will tell you that.

I don't think you can judge his tenure at Oakland. Al Davis showed in his press conference after firing Kiffen that he is insane. I am sure Davis had his hands on everything and probably screwed a lot of things up for Kiffen.

Another thing I hadn't thought of, after not succeeding in Oakland, he is going to want to prove to the world that he can get the job done as a head coach. I think he fits the college game much better than he does the pros. Hopefully he's here long-term.

Ok, so lets say this is his first head coaching position. Which you can argue. He has 1 season as an offensive coordinator. He has absolutely zero head coaching experience at the college level. That doesn't bother you?

In terms of recruiting, what would Lane Kiffin say to a recruit that no other coach in the country could say?

It's nothing against the guy. I just don't think he's ready to be a head coach at a program like Tennessee. I think he needs more experience. I think that running an entire program is a lot different than being a WR coach or an offensive coordinator for 1 season.

The two, NFL and College, are very different monsters. Emotion and Determination aside, I don't think anyone questions he has those, but logistically, what does have to offer? He has proven absolutely nothing in terms of his ability to be a HEAD coach at the college level.

2 seasons as an offensive coordinator. Get your facts straight. Your argument is completely nullified if you can't even get that right. Plus he was a head coach for a year and then some with Oakland so he brings more experience than just 2 years.

He also called plays for a team that went 23-3 during that span. Pete Carroll thought so much of him that he didn't even do a search for an OC, he immediately promoted Kiffin.

Bob Stoops was only a coordinator for 3 seasons and Oklahoma thought enough of him to give him the HC job.

I'd really like someone else to chime in on this that actually knows what they're talking about. I value your opinion about as much as the guy down the street who has never watched a down of football in his life.

I like the hire but for factual sake, Kiffin was the co-offensive coordinator @ USC.

For factual sake, you are wrong. He was the full offensive coordinator in 2005 and 2006.

I'm not trying to start anything here, but you are wrong. Look at any source you want. Sarkisian was the QB coach when Kiffin was OC. He was the QB coach for for the Raiders in 2004, but left after the season to be the assistant head coach and QB to Carroll. He added the offensive coordinator role in 2007.

Evey "source" I see officially lists him as the quarterback's coach or rb coach and as asst. head coach. His title during the 2005 Rose Bowl was listed as co-offensive coordinator but who really gives a damn.
