Kiffin could put a staff together with SEC ties
November 6, 2008 8:30 AM
Posted by ESPN.com's Chris Low

One of the names almost certainly to be on Tennessee's short list in its coaching search is former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin
Clemson and Washington are also possibilities for the 33-year-old Kiffin.

One of the attractions with Kiffin is that he would likely bring his father, Monte, with him. The elder Kiffin is the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and one of the most respected defensive minds in all of football.

The rest of Kiffin's staff could have a distinctive SEC feel to it. He and former Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron worked together when Kiffin was the offensive coordinator at Southern California, and Kiffin would almost certainly try to bring Orgeron with him as a defensive assistant and recruiting coordinator. Orgeron is now on the New Orleans Saints staff.

When Orgeron was at Ole Miss, he hired Kiffin's younger brother, Chris, to be a graduate assistant on the Rebels' defensive staff.

Somebody else with SEC ties to look for on Kiffin's staff would be Tim Davis, who's the director of player personnel at Alabama under Nick Saban. Davis was Saban's assistant offensive line coach with the Miami Dolphins. Prior to that, he spent three seasons on the Southern California staff alongside Kiffin and coached the Trojans' offensive line.

It would strike me as a shock if his father went there, seeing as he could have been with him in Oakland and was not. Also, why would you leave a pretty good pro job in Tampa, unless they are thinking he would do it simply because its his son.

Interesting read though, Orgeron would be a HUGE bonus to UT recruiting imo.

Three straight number one recruiting classes and an offense in 05 that averaged 49.1 points a game while he was offensive/recruiting coordinator at USC.... I think he would be a GREAT fit...

Say what you want to about Orgeron, but if Kiffin is hired and does bring in Ed, your defensive line will be full of hosses! Not to mention he is the best recruiter in the nation

I'm with you on this one. I already have Kiffin at the top of the list with Gruden. If he can bring in a staff like that then I say hire him now and stop wasting time!

This would be my first choice if I were a Vol fan, Orgeron obviously knows the SEC and knows National specifically California as well as recruiting in West Tenn/Memphis, Mississippi and Florida he basically knows alot of hot spots and the SEC ropes of recruiting and i'm sure he would win yet another Recruiter of the year title at UT..

hope and pray Vol fans
I know I hope you guys do get them because I would like the SEC to be on all cylinders like the Big 12 this year + we pick up y'all next year.

Anywho, Kiffin would be a solid pick up. However, I heard that Tennessee is trying to give Mike Leach Saban type dollars on ESPN Radio today. That would be hilariously great
