UA coaches get raises
Wednesday, August 10, 2005
STEVE KIRK - BHM News staff writer

TUSCALOOSA - All 12 members of Alabama football coach Mike Shula's support staff, including his assistant coaches, have received increases in pay for the coming season, including Tuesday's approval of new, two-year contracts for coordinators Joe Kines and Dave Rader.

Kines, who coaches the defense, received a $28,000 raise - the largest raise on the staff - to increase his yearly salary to $240,000. Rader, who coaches the offense, received a $5,000 raise to $217,000. They are the highest-paid of Shula's assistants and their contracts run through June 30, 2007.

For the other football staff members, one-year deals were approved through June 30, 2006. Those include the other seven assistant coaches, strength and conditioning coach Kent Johnston, operations director Randy Ross and assistant operations director Tim Bowens.

Dave Ungerer, who coaches the special teams and tight ends, has the third-highest salary. He received a $5,000 raise to $174,600.

After Kines, the largest raises went to Johnston ($15,000 increase to $140,000) and running backs coach Sparky Woods ($12,800 increase to $140,000).

In June, Shula received a one-year contract extension through Jan. 31, 2010, but no raise from his $900,000 annual salary. Athletics Director Mal Moore told The News this week that Shula wasn't interested in a raise for himself when the two men spoke about Shula's contract earlier this summer.

"The most important thing when he sat down with me," Moore said, "in his mind, were his assistant coaches - making sure their contracts were all handled."

Raises of $5,000 were granted to offensive line coach Bob Connelly ($142,800), wide receivers coach Charlie Harbison ($142,800), secondary coach Chris Ball ($142,800), defensive ends coach Paul Randolph ($132,200) and defensive tackles coach Buddy Wyatt ($132,200).

Ross was given a $6,678 raise to $102,078, while Bowens was given a $3,598 raise to $55,008.

"I want to have a great staff around me, No. 1," Shula said after Tuesday's first preseason practice. "I'm not worried about a raise or anything like that. I'm worried about winning football games. And the best way I know to do that is to keep our staff - which I think is a very, very good staff - together."

As recently as 10 years ago, it was rare for a college football assistant to make six figures annually. But salaries have skyrocketed in recent years. LSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher has a three-year contract worth $400,000 annually, according to published reports. Fisher reportedly received a $95,000 raise after interviewing with the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins.

Arkansas recently hired defensive coordinator Reggie Herring away from North Carolina State with a three-year package worth more than $330,000 annually. Herring's salary is twice as much as any previous Razorbacks assistant. Texas hired Gene Chizik away from Auburn after last season with a $295,000 annual deal.

Before he left for the NFL's Tennessee Titans, Southern California offensive coordinator Norm Chow raised the bar with a $500,000 annual deal.

Football wasn't the only sport on the agenda for the UA trustees' compensation committee. Although it unanimously approved the contracts for Kines and Rader in a morning conference call, it also approved new contracts for several UA head coaches in other sports.

New women's basketball coach Stephany Smith was granted a five-year contract worth $300,000 annually. Women's track and field coach Sandy Fowler was given a three-year extension through 2008 worth $80,000 annually, which includes a $10,000 raise. And new women's golf coach Mic Potter was given a three-year contract worth $75,000 annually.

The committee also approved a contract extension for softball coach Patrick Murphy through 2009, at his current $82,000 salary.

The committee extended men's track and field coach Harvey Glance's contract for one year through 2006 at $80,000, which is a raise of $5,000. It also extended swimming and diving coach Eric McIlquham's contract for two years through 2008 at $80,000, also a $5,000 raise.

I remember when Dubose only made 295k as a head coach. Wow, coaching football is definitely a good profession to be in these days. I wonder when the bubble will burst?

Mullen doubles as OC and QB coach.....but, obviously, Meyer has offensive veto power.

Spurrier is QB and offensive coordinator, and is making $800,000 less than Meyer. We call that in SC "one hell of a deal"!

This is a quote from the Mississippi Press:

"[Coach Ed]Orgeron's salary was not disclosed but it is estimated to be in excess of $1.5 million per year, after incentives and off-field pay inducements are figured in."

Well you have to consider they offered SOS 2.5 million in their original contract but he declined it in favor of a lower contract that dispersed the extra money between his assistants. Overall across the board the coaches are getting paid very well (I'll have to look for the numbers) and SOS has one of the best incentive packages of any coach out their now.
