Olemiss Two-sport National Champions?
I'm pretty sure no school has ever won the football and basketball National Championship in the same season. What schools, other than Florida, have had a shot at both?

Texas did. They won the 2005 NC in football. They were eliminated by LSU in the Elite eight while on their way to contend for the Final Four then ultimately the NC in the NCAA Tourney.

That would not have been the same season. The basketball season is before football. UF won the 2006 NC in basketball, and are now playing for the 2006 NC in football. The bowl game just isn't played until 2007.

The Texas football team won the title in the 2005/2006 season. The Texas basketball team was making a run at the 2005/2006 season NC.

Isn't that the same season? They both start in the fall of 2005, just at later dates. Then they both ended in 2006 but at different dates.

Yahoo puts it like this, basing it on academic years. This is how it should be, imo.

"This game was circled on the calendars long before it was determined that the Buckeyes and Gators would meet for the football national championship. No school has ever won a football and basketball title in the same academic year, but both schools have a great chance this season."

That would be the 2005 football season and the 2006 basketball season.

It's the same academic year and the same graduating class.

We've all been thinking it, but it's definitely a curse just to say it OUT LOUD.

Congratulations!

Yeah, but IMHO it wont happen this year either!
I think State just has too much physically for the Gators. I think State wins by 5-9 points.
Well, we'll see wont we?
Politicians should be required to wear uniforms like NASCAR. At least the TAXPAYERS would know who their corporate sponsors are !

Not getting ahead of myself. Just curious to know if it's ever happened before. I know nobody's ever won both. I want to know if anybody's ever played for both.

hate to break out the history books...but UK won the hoops titles in 48, 49, and 51, while at the same time when we had Bear Bryant as our coach, beat Oklahoma in the title game in football and snapped their 30 game winning streak to win the football title in 50. We won the SEC and got beat in the tourney by NYCC in hoops that season. But we were 25-5.

Did a little research, but couldn't find a record of Kentucky ever winning a football NC. Every resource I checked claims Oklahoma and Tennessee were CO-NC in 1950.

The 1950 NC won by Coach Bryant wasn't recognized by the AP until 2003, 53 years later. I remember when I lived in So. Indiana, it was the front page story of the Courier Journal (out of Louisville).

OU and UK are AP co-Champs of 1950. The only other time the AP has selected two teams was in 1947 when ND was selected just after the regular season, then the AP also crowned Michigan NC's in 1947 after their bowl victory. But Michigan didn't have to wait 53 years for recognition.

In 1961 the Football Writers Association of America ( FWAA ) Voted Ohio State
National Champions in football. (I don't know how, since Alabama had one of the greatest college teams of all time that year; they were selected National Champs by everyone else.)
That same year, the University of Cincinnati defeated Ohio State 65-60 in OT
to win the Basketball championship.
So, technically, Ohio State did have a shot at both Championships
"Florida? Tennessee? Auburn? Georgia? They're all great teams, great programs. But in the grand scheme of things, none have overtaken Alabama as THE football program in the SEC."--An article in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

"If someone in Los Angeles asks you and you say 'I played at Alabama,' everyone knows what that means. If you had to say 'I played at Auburn,' that would be about like saying 'I played at Rutgers.' People aren't even sure where it is."
Leon Douglas
