Alabama Miles in a nutshell

When it comes to wits, Tressel miles ahead of Les - CBS News

When it comes to wits, Tressel miles ahead of Les
Jan. 4, 2008

Tell Gregg your opinion!

LSU coach Les Miles is lucky the BCS national championship game isn't a board game between the coaches. If they were playing checkers, Ohio State's Jim Tressel would quadruple-jump Miles into submission. If they were playing chess, Miles would ask to play checkers.

I don't think Les Miles is very smart. Sorry, I don't. He doesn't look smart, for one thing. He could have been the lead character in Sling Blade. His eyes are too close together. I bet I could jam a thumb over the bridge of his nose and poke both pupils.

You're darn right Jim Tressel has the upper hand in this coaching matchup. (AP)
Looks can be deceiving, of course. Despite looking dumb, Les Miles could actually be smart. Except he doesn't act smart. And this is why he cannot beat Jim Tressel on Monday night in the BCS title game.

At some point the game between these two evenly matched teams -- easily two of the top four teams in the country, behind Southern Cal and Georgia -- will come down to a coaching battle of wits, and that's simply not fair. Tressel is cold and calculating, a coaching reptile. Miles is a nitwit.

Here's what I know, and it's all I need to know: Miles risked this entire season, and his entire reputation, on the Michigan job. That thing came open at a bad time for Miles, a Michigan alumnus. There's no question about that. The timing wasn't Miles' fault, but what happened next was.

Miles clearly had people negotiating with Michigan on his behalf, even as LSU was preparing to play Tennessee in the SEC Championship Game, and when the Miles-Michigan dalliance hit the media, all hell broke loose in both states.

Every day was a disaster, media asking players if they were distracted and Miles trying to play it cool and Michigan smugly carrying on as if it had its next coach -- Les Miles -- in the bag.

Somehow LSU overcame the distractions created by its head coach, beating Tennessee for the SEC title and, lo and behold, a spot in the BCS Championship Game.

You ask me, LSU got lucky that day. LSU won't get lucky against Ohio State, and it has nothing to do with the talent. On a player-for-player basis, LSU probably has more speed and skill than Ohio State. The recruiting rankings over the past four years would say so. The 2008 NFL Draft scouting reports would say the same. Ohio State has talent ... but LSU has more.

But when it comes to coaching, LSU has Les.

Which means Ohio State has more.

You know how I feel about Les Miles. Now let's discuss Tressel.

The man doesn't make mistakes, anywhere. He can be boring off the field and his teams can be boring on it, but Ohio State doesn't beat Ohio State. Tressel simply won't let it happen.

He knows how to milk the 60-minute game clock better than any college coach I've ever seen, a skill that's hard to define with words but is easy to recognize with eyes. It's a lack of panic. It's an abundance of patience. It's complete trust in his players that they have been meticulously prepared to win the game, and that at the end of 60 minutes, they will do just that.

Watch this game unfold. You'll see what I mean. There will come a point in the game for each coach to do something dramatic. Les Miles will fall for it, taking an unnecessary risk because he thinks that's what a good coach does. It might even work, because after all, LSU does have all kinds of talent. Tressel won't succumb to the moment. He will make the moment succumb to him.

Back to my original point on Miles and his handling of the Michigan job, being unable to control the story to the point where the story could have consumed him and his team. That would never happen with Tressel. How do I know? Because it never has happened with Tressel.

Don't be stupid. Don't think that, in an absence of stories linking Tressel to this job or that one, that it hasn't happened. You don't think another college powerhouse or, more likely, an NFL team has called Tressel about becoming its new coach in the past several years or even the last several weeks? Please.

Tressel, and Urban Meyer of Florida, are the best two coaches in college football. The two most complete packages. Those guys could win at a big school, at a small school, and in the NFL. They're that good, and everyone in the business knows it.

You don't think an NFL team has tried to pry Tressel from the Buckeyes? Sure it has. Only you never hear about it because Tressel wouldn't stand for it.

Unlike Miles, whose ego or ignorance or naiveté allowed the Michigan story to go haywire, Tressel won't allow it. He's smart enough to understand that his situation -- whether it's a career move or an in-game coaching decision -- is best served if he is in complete control.

Miles hasn't learned that. He's too easily controlled, a puppet who doesn't know he's a puppet, and he'll be controlled Monday night. Jim Tressel will be holding the strings.

Isn't this an SEC site? Who wants have to read Big-Ten propoganda? This guy is obviously not an SEC fan. Who gives a crap what he thinks. Plus it's downright insulting. I wouldn't appreciate this piece of garbage as true literature if it was about Nick Saban. (Which it very well could have been.)

It's absolute garbage and doesn't belong in the professional media. It belongs in the National Enquirer under the Title: Monster and Posse set to Ravage Columbus football team.

If you bother going to the website, there's another article set up to oppose this one. They are doing a He Said, She Said opposing views bit.

The other article.

Peg Miles as a boob, look in mirror to see the idiot
Jan. 4, 2008
By Mike Freeman
CBSSports.com National Columnist
Tell Mike your opinion!

Behind his back some people call him psycho. They call him The Big Bluster. The Mouth that Roared. Others call him The Mad Hatter. My man Dennis Dodd has nicknamed him Crazy Les.

To me, they're all wrong. To me, Les Miles is a genius. He's the best coach in college football.

You'll read the pigeon droppings of one Gregg "Prince of Darkness" Doyel, discussing how The Sweater Vest is Albert Einstein and Miles is a boob. Then again, what would you expect from a writer who likes the MMA, the tapeworm of professional sports?

It would be grand idiocy to suggest that the career of Miles compares to that of Jim Tressel. The Ohio State coach might go down as one of the best college football has ever seen. What Tressel did this season -- taking a dispirited, embarrassed program blown out by Florida just a year ago back to the title game -- is one of the single most impressive coaching jobs ever.

Tressel is treated like royalty by fans and the media while Miles is portrayed as Uncle Fester, the kook in the attic wearing tin foil on his head.

What has occurred with Miles -- his slaphappy ways, his foul mouth, his flirtations with Michigan, his perceived zaniness and his Gunnery Sgt. Hartman haircut -- has clouded just how great a coach he is. Miles, in fact, is better in the early part of his career than Tressel was in his first three years at Ohio State.

So make fun of Miles all you'd like. Or say he couldn't hold the fuzz on Tressel's sweater.

But before you do, let me take you back to one of the most devastating moments in the history of this country.

In August 2005, Miles' first season, Hurricane Katrina battered the state of Louisiana. There were LSU players, some 30 of them, whose families, like many thousands of others across the state, were affected by the storm. The apartments and dorm rooms of Tiger footballers were crammed with family members and their belongings.

LSU's first game was postponed until later in the year. The second against Arizona State was originally scheduled to be played on LSU's home field, but the campus was being used as a disaster relief area, so they played in Tempe.

If that wasn't bad enough, when Hurricane Rita hit just a short time later, Miles had to deal with another delayed game and the fears of his players.

Miles and his Tigers handled the disruptions and the psychological devastation of seeing the cities around them reduced to rubble like champions. LSU went 10-1 in Miles' first regular season, a hurricane-plagued one, beating four top 20 teams in the process.

People forget that Les Miles, the Miles who led his team through a natural disaster. I'll take the emotional Miles over the buttoned-down Vest any day.

Miles coaches in the tougher SEC, hasn't had a doddering old goat to beat up on the way Tressel had in Lloyd Carr, and in 2005 and 2006 became the first coach in school history to post back-to-back 10-win regular seasons. Miles is a stunning 33-6 at LSU in the nastiest conference that contains some of the best coaching talent.

The full Miles line: 33 victories, 20 SEC victories, 13 wins over top 25 teams, seven wins over top 10 teams, one SEC title, two bowl victories and back-to-back top five final rankings. On Monday, he could add a national title.

In just three years.

Yeah, he's terrible.

"He enjoys being the underdog where people think he's not a smart football coach," LSU AD Skip Bertman told USA Today. "In reality, he's extraordinarily gifted as a tactician. He's so underrated, it's hilarious."

Some of his coaching decisions have been wacky to say the least. Still, none of the great coaches across football -- not Tressel, not Urban Meyer, not Mark Mangino -- have overcome what Miles did early in his career.

None of them had to beat the toughest opponent ever: the aftermath of an apocalyptic storm.

The only disaster Tressel has had to deal with was Maurice Clarett.

There is more sophistication to Miles than people think. You have to be deeper than we think to lead a team to 10 wins and a bowl victory during a hurricane-ravaged year.

Miles reminds me of the Get Smart episode where the bad guy says, "You've fallen into a very clever trap."

"I've fallen into cleverer traps than this before," Smart replies.

If you believe Miles wears a clown suit and is steeped in silliness, you've fallen into the same trap.

Sucker. He's smarter -- and better -- than you think.

What the hell are you talking about, Cianne? What big girl panties could possibly point to anything but the obvious that BP is using this lousy piece of literature to once again, make Miles out to be an imbecile and by virtue his coach look like a saint. It's absolute crap and doesn't belong here with absolutely no mention of the counter-point story.

Put your damn big girl panties on and keep your insults to yourself.

It's pretty charitable to call CBSSports.com "professional media". "Ship of Fools" would be a more apt description.
