LSU Looking to Lock Up SEC Title Against Florida on Mardi Gras Day 23 February 2009, 11:31 am
Just over one year after firing head coach John Brady, the LSU Tigers couldn't find themselves in a better position.
The Tigers sit atop the SEC standings and a lock for the NCAA Tournament with a 23-4 overall record and a three game lead in the Southeastern Conference with just four games left to play.
New head coach Trent Johnson has breathed life into the purple and gold and turned LSU's home floor, the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, into the formidable floor it once was.
And things couldn't be better timed for the Tigers. On Mardi Gras day, the Tigers will give their fans a chance to revel in the festivities of Mardi Gras, and possibly an SEC Championship.
The Tigers play host to the Florida Gators in the PMAC on Tuesday night and they will get to showcase their home court advantage and new look basketball team in front of a nationally televised ESPN audience.
LSU has won the past two meetings with Florida, including a game in 2007 over the eventual National Champions. This time with a win, they would clinch a share of the overall SEC title and secure Johnson's bid for SEC Coach of the Year, and possibly even National Coach of the Year.
Tipoff is slated for 8:00 PM CT, plenty of time for Tiger fans to get amped up and ready to go before Mardi Gras 2009's biggest event.
For once, not all eyes will be on Bourbon Street on Mardi Gras night.
The LSU Tiger basketball team has earned that honor this year.
