I dont understand the benefit. Watching the USM Texas game and USM had an infield hit, that had he run through the bag he wouldve been safe. Is there any benefit to this?

the only reason you would wanna do that is to avoid a tag..........so i.e., if you nail a liner down third base line and you know the throw from third might pull the first baseman off the bag then a slide would help you avoid a tag

I agree the only reason to slide, not only will you not get there any faster you are in no position to advance if the throw is wild.

Yes, generally speaking you're only "supposed" to slide if you see the 1st baseman pulled off the bag and he's coming down the line toward you. You'd slide to avoid a sweep tag. In the game last night, it was a hustle play. Yeah he probably would have been safe if he had run through, but I won't fault the kid for sliding. He was trying to make something happen.
