Nov. 8, 2009

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - The South Carolina women's soccer team won the 2009 SEC Tournament championship with a dramatic 8-7 edge in penalty kicks over LSU at the Orange Beach Sportsplex. The title is the first in program history and the first SEC title won by a South Carolina team since the women's track & field team won the 2005 outdoor championships.

The Lady Gamecocks had gone undefeated to 13-0-1 and 5-0-1 in SEC play, and was ranked #5 nationally, before losing 3 of their final 5 matches of the regular season. They righted the ship however and stormed through the SEC tournament for the title. The Lady Gamecocks (17-3-2) will play host in the first round of their regional for the 2009 NCAA tournament as the #2-seed on Friday against Davidson (12-9-1). Rutgers (13-3-4) will square off against Duke (8-8-4) in the other regional match in Columbia.
