[LIKE IT IS: Nutt awfully festive after beating Arkansas
By Wally Hall
LITTLE ROCK — They met at midfield for the customary handshake.
It lasted the normal few seconds, and a disappointed Bobby Petrino turned and walked off the field.
An incredibly happy Houston Nutt lingered for pictures and video. His twin daughters were there.
It was a moment he was cherishing thoroughly. His Ole Miss players doused him with Gatorade after beating 3-3 Arkansas in a game that wasn’t as close as the 30-17 score.
After observing and writing about approximately 125 Nutt-coached games, this scribe thinks this one was his best ever.
He managed the clock and his team.
He didn’t ask the Rebels to do things they couldn’t do,and he relied heavily on his biggest weapon, Dexter Mc-Cluster.
Mostly, he coached to win.
His joy after the game was hard earned and well deserved. But it will always be a bit puzzling why he feels so vindicated for beating the school where he coached for 10 years before quitting to take the Ole Miss job.
He was not fired or run off at Arkansas. At Nutt’s final UA news conference Nov. 26, 2007, when it was announced he was quitting, then-Chancellor John White said emphatically he had offered Nutt a contract extension and that it had been turned down.] |
