In order to continue adding local talent for next season's National Superior Basketball, Quebradillas Pirates have begun to integrate its staff to guard David Huertas.

The Puerto Rican, 21, currently serves as one of the stellar team of Rebels of the University of Mississippi in the NCAA.

The coapoderado of Quebradillas, Gabriel Miranda, explained that already has scheduled talks with Huertas and his family.

"This weekend we have a reunion with the mother of David Huertas and his stepfather, which we hope will be satisfactory. The ends academically and is considering the option of one or more competitive or years to come. At the end academically, and he wants to start making your money and understand that we are in a good position to agree with him, "said Miranda.

The Pirates have already begun their practices and have the veteran Ian Lockhart, Angel Alamo, Richie Dalmau, Angel 'Bimbi' Rosas, Jonathan Garcia, Mark Konekni. "We are waiting for Greg Stevenson and what is the process of permits that comply with their documents in the federation. We should not have that problem, "said Miranda.

Yeah, I saw this earlier this morning. I'm surprised he's not waiting till after his senior year. Seems like that would at least give him a bigger offer elsewhere. Is he struggling financially?

Well he's decided to play professionally. Now we have two open scholarships.

David Huertas Leaves Ole Miss To Pursue Pro Hoops Career - OleMissSports.com—Official Web Site of University of Mississippi Athletics

OXFORD, Miss. – Junior guard David Huertas has elected to forego his senior year at Ole Miss and pursue a professional basketball career in his native country of Puerto Rico, head coach Andy Kennedy announced Monday.

Huertas led the Rebels in scoring this past season with 18.1 points per game and was named to the All-SEC second team by the Associated Press and league coaches. He was also a second team All-District selection by the NABC.

After transferring from the University of Florida, Huertas sat out the 2006-07 season and started the past two years. His 152 three-pointers in two seasons ranks sixth on the all-time Rebel career chart.

“We appreciate all that David contributed during his two seasons with us, and we wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors,” Kennedy said.

“I want to thank all my coaches and everyone at Ole Miss for the best three years of my life,” Huertas said. “After four years in college, I am ready to move into my life as an adult and be able to keep playing basketball and be with my family at the same time.”

That about sums it up. He will graduate in May with a degree in journalism so I'm not surprised in the least bit that he is going.

The real question is, will the team be better off without him?

With Huertas leaving, it means we'll see the more traditional 3 guard, 2 post lineup more often than sticking with four guards as our mainstay. You'll probably see variations like this:

G - Chris Warren/Will Bogan
G - Terrico White/Trevor Gaskins
G - Zach Graham/Trevor Gaskins
G - Eniel Polynice/Trevor Gaskins
C - DeAundre Cranston

or

G - Chris Warren/Will Bogan
G - Terrico White/Trevor Gaskins
G - Eniel Polynice/Zach Graham
F - Murphy Holloway/Terrence Henry
F - DeAundre Cranston/Reginald Buckner

My bets are on the second lineup being the starters.

The basketball team will be much better off without him. Word was that he was selfish and all about "me, me, me"...."let me get my numbers!"

How can you say you would be better off? He was the best you had. The guy can solid shoot the basketball. He will be missed, count on it.

Why not us?? South Carolina, 2010 SEC EAST CHAMPIONS!

We won't be better off but I don't think there will necessarily be a giant drop off. It does clear up a logjam at the guard position though.

David's game struggled as he tried to take over too much for Chris Warren which resulted in multitudes of bad shots. For a guy who needs to make a couple to get into rhythm, it kept him off kilter all season.

To say he was the best we had is a bit of a stretch as well. Terrico was a much better player at the end of the year than David in pretty much every aspect except free throw shooting. His intensity will be missed but I don't know if that worked out to the betterment or detriment of the team half the time.

I only saw a couple of Ole Miss games this year, but you can't say losing the #4 scorer in the SEC won't hurt. But it won't necessarily be a big loss.. as stated before it seemed like he took a lot of dumb shots.

I still think Ole Miss will be one of the best teams in the SEC next year.. possibly Top 2 or 3.
Maybe not.

Yeah................

But if I ever got the chance I'd punch Kennedy in the face. What is the word on his trial? I haven't heard a thing about that since like January.
