ATLANTA – Terrico White and David Huertas continue to bring in postseason honors, as the Ole Miss standouts were both named All-SEC second team by the Associated Press on Monday. White was tabbed as the league’s newcomer of the year.
The Rebel duo earned the exact same honors from the SEC coaches last week, while Huertas was also selected second team all-district by the NABC on March 6.
White becomes the second player in school history to receive newcomer of the year honors from the AP, joining 2001 selection Justin Reed. The two are also the only players in school history to be named SEC Freshman of the Year by the league coaches.
A year removed from Craigmont High School in Memphis, Tenn., White averaged 13.7 points per game in his first collegiate season, including a league freshman-best 18.4 points per game in SEC play. Huertas finished with the team’s highest scoring average at 18.1 in all games.
The two helped Ole Miss finish with a winning record (16-15) and at least seven league wins (7-9) for the third straight season under head coach Andy Kennedy, despite being decimated by season-ending injuries to guards Trevor Gaskins, Eniel Polynice and preseason All-SEC first teamer Chris Warren before league play ever started.
The Rebels look to return all 12 scholarship players for next season’s team, which includes the rare return of seven starters (Huertas, Polynice, Warren, White, Zach Graham, Murphy Holloway and Malcolm White). Ole Miss also adds standout Memphis signee Reginald Buckner to the 2009-10 frontcourt. |
