Default World Series Predictions
I was surprised to see last night that Kruk and Steve Phillips picked the Phillies. Their rationale was the Phillies bullpen was better. Now, Steve Phillips is retracing his steps because of the emergence of David Price.

I think the Rays wax the Phils in five may be six depending on if Hamels is dominate. Bull pen is not going to mean crap when the Rays outscore the Phils 10-2. The Phils big bats are too inconsistant to keep up with the Rays. Plus, outside Myers and Hamels the Phils then drop off considerably in their starting rotation with Moyer and Blanton. No way the Phils win those two games when the Rays can counter with ALCS MVP Garza and Sonnanstine.

My pick is Rays in 5 or 6.

I have the Rays in 6, too. I think the first game is a tossup with Hamels pitching. He is very similar to Lester who we didn't hit too well. After Hamels, I like how we match up with Myers, Blanton, and Moyer. I think we can score some runs on these guys pretty early. Also, as Ted mentioned, the big time hitters for the Phillies are too inconsistent. Howard will end up being very similar to Ortiz in the sense that he might go yard once or twice, but I think we are able to control him.

Plus, I think the Rays winning in 7 is going to be a blessing in disguise. I am hoping we keep the momentum going and the Phils come out a little cold.

The Rays do not have much left, imo. The bullpen is struggling, and the Phillies are very rested. Phillies in 6

The Phillies in 4.

It should be a great series, and I can't wait. I just hope we can keep the momentum we've had since we clinched. Phillies in probably 5-6, hopefully..

This is one of those classic scenarios where I really won't know who I want to win until the first big hit. I'll either be happy or upset, and I'll go from there.

I'm a Sox fan who has a great friend who loves the Rays so I've been watching them most of the year. They're playing some of their best ball right now, and they are almost completely healthy. If they can keep the momentum going there's no reason they can't win....but there's still no doubt they've been playing above their heads. Now's not the time for a dose of reality.

Here's what makes things exciting for the Rays looking forward....even if they do come back to reality they are still comparable to the Phillies. Both offenses are capable of exploding for a bunch of runs, but they're also susceptible to freezing cold nights at the plate. The Rays are a little more consistent, and the Phils are a little more explosive.

In the end it's all going to come down to pitching (like every other year, right? ). I think Hamels is definitely the best pitcher in the series so I would favor him to get 2 wins. Meyers has been really good the 2nd half of the season (like Garza) so I expect he and Kaz to probably split their starts. I'll bet Sonny beats Blanton, so it comes down to Garza v. Moyer for the title. Can Garza beat Moyer twice like he did Lester? I'm not so sure.

I'm really thinking Phillies in 7, but since they're so close I may have to give the edge to the Rays w/ homefield advantage.

That's $1 charged to GF.

(For those who don't get the joke, the Rays front office would fine all media and Rays players/officials who ever used the term 'Devil Rays' now that they're just the Rays. They would actually send bills to papers and tv networks. I have a dislike of Jonny Gomes and Matt Garza, but everyone else in the organization is cool with me. )

What do you mean when you say they don't have much left? There is a three day rest from last night until the World Series starts so all the pitchers will be ready to go.

Dude, this is baseball not football. A seven game baseball series equals like .025 of a football game. They play 162 games in the regular season. 4 to 7 more is not going to tire anyone out.

Kazmir will probably end of up starting game 1 since Shields threw 100+ pitches on Saturday. Rays have yet to announce their starting pitcher, but Kaz would be the logical choice.

I agree with your analysis except for the dominance of Hamels. If Hamels is the dominate pitcher you make him out to be then I would be a couple hundred dollars richer. In the semis of fantasy baseball I had Hamels against the Mets on Sunday night. He sucked and I lost in the semis. He is pitching great right now, but he had some real duds during the regular season. I expect him to have one in the world series and him and Kaz split their starts.

Shields and Kaz have both had their fair share of duds this season too. If I had to pick from these two rotations without worrying about righty/lefty matchups for just one game, I would pick Hamels every time. He definitely had the occasional dud (he was on my team as well so I feel your pain), but still had a 3.09 ERA in the regular season. He now has a 1.23 ERA in 3 postseason starts.

They are a very young team, they are still shocked to still be playing. I think the Phillies are very rested and are in great shape to win it. I am pulling for the Rays, but I just think Philly has a better team.

This is true, but I think another factor that favors the Rays is Maddon over Manuel. Maddon made some mistakes in the ALCS, but I think his demeanor is exceptional and really grounds the young Rays team. I am looking forward to it starting on Wednesday.
