Default Thoughts after Jackson State
While I think it is very hard to get any type of idea after just a week of play, especially when the opponent is Jackson State, here is an attempt:

1) We played very sloppy in the first half. We had like five holding penalties. We should've scored no less than 28 points in the first half alone. I do think a bit of this was due to the officiating which was very tight on both sides. I think we had like 12 penalties for 150 something yards and JSU had 15 penalties.

2) You can tell instantly that we are a much better coached team. These are essentially the same players. The difference is that they are being utilized correctly. Our WRs look slick and all but one is a frosh/soph. That is exciting.

3) Our defense looked much more disciplined. It felt like they were playing more of an NFL style defense with the LBs sticking back and waiting on the correct angle on a ball carrier instead of just blitzing him. The fundamentals have obviously improved much on that side of the ball. The CBs are pretty awful.. we're going to need a consistent pass rush against a team with any type of a passing threat.

4) Christian Ducre was certainly disappointing with his two fumbles but that game way for Robert Elliott to shine. Elliott looked good running the ball and he is a typical spread RB. He was all over the field.. lined up in the slot a few times even. It's exciting that we have two heavy run guys with Dixon and Ducre and a couple of shifty backs with Stallworth and Elliott. I didn't see Perkins get in the game but I imagine he could help out also.

5) The dual-QB system worked much better than I anticipated. I would like to see them switch them out more within drives. For the most part, Lee would get an entire drive and then Relf would have his turn. It certainly gives our opponents something else to prepare for. While I think that Relf is better suited for our offense, he isn't as good of a pure passer as Tyson Lee. The two styles compliment each other very nicely and we'll likely have to play both the entire season. I think it's going to be much the same even when Tyler Russell takes the reigns.. similar to Leak/Tebow.

6) Chad Bumphis is the real deal. He caught two passes for two scores and 22 yards total. He only played in just a couple of series that I saw. In fact, all of our starting WRs didn't get a lot of time. Also, the first play from scrimmage where Bumphis got the reverse and chunked it down the field was a very accurate pass. Definitely catchable.

7) I liked the fact that we scored four straight times in the second half while switching out both QBs and many other backups at various positions. We obviously aren't the most talented in the league so we're spreading the load around.

8) Marcus Green can be used as a real weapon. He has great speed and a nice set of hands. I hope they keep going to him. He is a great weapon over the middle.

9) The play calling for the most part was pretty good. We ran some creative formations that I have never seen before at State. We're giving our players a chance to win. While the first half was a piss poor effort, the second half made up for it nicely. That's about what I expected to start the game.

10) The atmosphere was terrific. The Video Board is amazing. They need to turn it up a notch, though. Everything was coordinated very well. It looks like the AD has a real handle of how things go down in the course of a game. The Sonic Boom was absolutely amazing. We should pay them to perform at every halftime show.

Overall I'd give the game about a B+. I want to see what we can do against a real defense. I also want to see us start faster like we did in the second half. Getting Dixon back will help.. hopefully Mullen knows how to motivate that guy.
Maybe not.

I noticed that there were also no holding penalties in the 2nd half for us (and we had the BS unsportsmanlike call), so I guess Mullen really got to them at the half.

I am excited to see what happens when he actually opens up the playbook next week for Auburn. But I'm extremely concerned about the secondary. Yeah, they only got burned twice, but you're probably not going to catch an SEC WR when he gets that many steps on you. We're going to have to blitz until the front four is consistently breaking through.

I talked to a player last night after the game and asked him what Coach Mullen said at halftime. He said that Mullen wasn't really upset.. he was just trying to make the players understand that they could win this game 70-0 if they wanted. Obviously the message was delivered either way and the job got done.
Maybe not.

i like the insight benny....knowing a player helps alot. its cool to see a level headed coach at the helm. i think that a choach really has to get his players in the right mindset otherwise they break...a relentlessly positive coach like rick neuheisel is what that reminds me of. a coach can come in and brow beat a player to death and really destroy their willingness to execute, but when you coach positively and are constructive, good things can happen. my overall take on the game, we were slow to start, but that would have happened no matter who we played. thankfully, we werent hurt too bad by it. Bumphis looked great on his two tds and i like the effort shown to give heavens some love. ducre looked bad, but elliott looked great, and considering his injury issues, i was really glad to get some quality touches. relf made a statement and should start...if not for his runs alone, but i like how mullen isnt necessarily calling out a starter. should cause some teams some difficulty and takes alot of pressure off whoever is under center. i feel pretty darn good bout the team and look forward to see what we can do at auburn. i like our chances.

also, i think we need more pressure on d. we should be getting alot more pressure, but im sure they are holding back (in the blitz packages) until auburn. we held our own, but i wanted more sacks, pressures, and knock downs. but we were stout nontheless.

It was nice to see the Bulldogs finally pick up some steam and have some great plays on both sides of the ball. I was wondering there for a while if it was going to end up being a close one. Glad Bumphis got the two TDs. I watched him play in high school, and he's a hard worker.

If anyone would like to see a few pics from the game, here's a slideshow:

Benny, I'll agree with everything but this.

I don't think Tyson Lee has anything to offer that Relf doesn't offer better. He has a history of being a terrible passer but he looked dead-on in the Jackson State game. Not only that, but he offers a rushing threat also. He's uncatchable if he breaks free.

While I do think Relf will ultimately be better than Lee, he was given almost no practice snaps over the past couple of years by the previous regime. Atleast right now, they are co-equals at best for Relf.
Maybe not.

I agree, but since this spring Relf has been Mullen's focus. We know what he can do, and by the looks of his passing game Saturday... Mullen has really done a great job of critiquing his game. Tyson Lee is a lost cause.

This year we are going to be a rush-based spread offense due to the talent we have (not only do we have 10000000 running backs, most of them catch better than our WR corp), and Relf is perfect in that scheme. Short distance passing they're just about even. Rushing, Relf wins. Long distance passing, Relf wins by a long shot. So I just don't get why Tyson Lee needs to ever see the field.

I'm excited about our skill positions on offense.. we just need someone to get them the ball while taking the pressure off in key situations.

If we sign Cam Newton, next year could be a very very good year for the Bulldogs.

I also think that we only showed the bare minimum of our offense and defense. We'll likely see a lot more wildcat in the next couple of games. I really think Mullen coached a very good game. The halftime adjustments were outstanding.
Maybe not.

No doubt. We basically have the same team from last year, and every improvement we saw was strictly from coaching.

yeah benny, i agree that we were very basic on both sides of the ball the first game...i think we will see a lot more stuff involving bumphis and dixon next week...this week will be the test to see what kind of team we have before i start making conclusions...

BUT lee should be an afterthought be the vandy week...i can understand that mullen can start him this week because of experience but bringing in relf to play most of the game then letting relf start against vandy and so forth...

i watched lee do the same thing he did all last year....he sat back for a little more than 1 second then takes off running because he CANT FREAKING SEE!!!!...the kid seems like a good kid but just has physical limitations that limits our offense...everyone say him run around while relf can run better but stood in the pocket and threw fastballs to the WRs...lee just cant do that...

but i cant wait to see what mullen does this weekend...you can def tell this is a different team which is great!

GO DAWGS!!!

ok im finally watching the replay of the game...noticing a few things...
1. still dont see anything lee can do that relf cant...and that includes passing...he also scrambles with his eyes down field better...tyson makes the OL look worse than they are...
2. the OL and DL didnt play as bad as it seemed from the stands...OL might not have opened holes a truck can drive through but overall look better than last year...i still havent seen the DL do anything besides bullrush and rutland was letting the ball go pretty quick with our players in his face...ive seen i think two half blitzes where the LB comes up field to cover a zone more than go after the QB...still have a ways to go though...
3. i think quite a few of those holding penalties would be border line in sec play...a lot on the outside by position players which can be fixed in a week usually...
4. kind of getting on the negative side now, our secondary is very suspect...
5. i know stallworth is coming very soon off of a major injury but should probably be the 4th RB...dixon should be a stud and ducre and elliott look a lot better running the ball with field vision than stallworth...
6. our passing game is going to rely a lot on bumphis and heavens because it seems our QBs like the slot guy....
7. our young DL and WR are going to eventually be very good (had to end on a positive ha)

GO DAWGS!!!
