Richard Murphy is one of the most talented running backs in the SEC. But so are the other two players ahead of him on the LSU depth chart. Senior Charles Scott and Keiland Williams will be hard to get off of the field this season, but that does not matter to Murphy. He knows that his hard work will pay off, as it has for others before.
“This is LSU, we all have to wait our turn. I talk to, he told me to be patient. He’s been through this, and now look at him.” Murphy said. “I just need to be the best I can be.”
Becoming the best he can be has led Murphy to put in extra time working on preparing all aspects of his game. “I want to be a complete player. Running the ball, catching the ball, blocking, blitz pick-up. Everything.”
Having players like Scott and Williams ahead of him also focuses Murphy on perfecting all of those skills. “We are expected to do it all here. I want to win, and so do the other guys. After last season we need to put it all together. If to win we need to play Charles or Keiland or Trindon, then that’s what we’ll do.”
Putting his time in and working as hard as he can is just a start for Murphy. The Junior from Rayville, LA has seen the results that the players who have come before him have had.
“Look at the guys who have played here. Everybody waits their turn. Addai did, (Jacob) Hester did, Charles and Keiland did. It’s what happens at a place like this. There is talent here. I know my time will come. I’m just going to work as hard as I can, and when my number is called, I’ll be ready.”
Murphy is ready for the 2009 season to start. “I know I’ve worked hard for this season. I feel like any play could be the one. Whenever my time comes, I’ll be ready.”
