Wednesday 8-12-09 Practice Report The afternoon session of the first real two-a-day practice took place in the indoor facility because of the threat of rain today. For the second day in a row, the entire roster participated. While the team basically ran the same type of drills as before, there were a few other noticeable differences as well. Quarterbacks Jordan Jefferson looked like the best of the bunch today. He hit all of his receivers in stride during the deep routes drill and had great zip and accuracy on his passes in the crossing routes drill. The two gunslingers Jarrett Lee and Chris Garrett seemed to be overthrowing all of their targets. Russell Shepard, though throwing much better compared to the first few days of practice, is still having trouble hitting receivers in stride. It seemed almost every receiver had to wait on his throws. They also worked on running the option with the backfield. Being an option quarterback for most of his high school career, Russell Shepard looked the most impressive here Running Backs Trindon Holliday was missing in action for the second straight day. Tyler Edwards, who moved from tight end to full back recently, was not in attendance either. The backs worked mainly on pass blocking today. Despite his stocky figure, Dominique Allen did not do well in this. He looked very sluggish and could not keep anything in front of him. It was amazing to see the freshmen Michael Ford and Drayton Calhoun running the option with Shepard. It looks like that could be a staple in the LSU offense for the next three years. Wide Receivers The big news from here was when Shepard moved over to the receivers for a rep after working out with the quarterbacks. Unfortunately, he did not have a chance to show his ability as a Jarrett Lee pass flew well over his head. He went back with the quarterbacks after that. The two freshmen, Jhyryn Taylor and Rueben Randle were the most impressive in front of the media today. Despite his Terrell Owens build, Randle is a deceptively quick receiver. After working with the quarterbacks, coach DJ McCarthy had his squad work on beating one-on-one coverages. Like the practices before, McCarthy stressed the importance of agile footwork. Tight Ends Tight Ends did not do much this afternoon. After a long talk with coach Don Yanowsky, they spent the last 4 minutes of the media time working with the quarterbacks. Like I have said in past reports, Deangelo Peterson looks really good. He looks faster than some of the receivers, even with the extra weight. Offensive Line Unlike yesterday, PJ Lonergan received the most reps at center, while T-Bob Hebert mostly worked with the second string. It seems there is no clear-cut favorite right now and head coach Les Miles is just trying to give them equal reps at this point. The line just worked on blocking assignments for different plays during the media's attendance. I did not get to see much of them because they were on the far side of the practice field.
