Given High Fives: 1,091 Rep Power: 2464 | More Visitors For Next Week's June Football Camp Gavin Webster is the brother of former Tiger all-American and current New York Giants cornerback Corey Webster, and like Corey Gavin is a star quarterback at Lutcher High. The 6-0, 190-pounder is being recruited as a college quarterback by TCU, Mississippi State and Tulsa, and several other schools including LSU are looking at him as a defensive back or wide receiver, but so far he doesn't have any major offers yet.
Given that Webster accounted for better than 1,300 yards passing and 15 touchdowns while also rushing for 636 yards and 16 more scores in leading Lutcher to the 3A title as a junior last year, you'd have to say it's a bit peculiar that he's been given such a lukewarm treatment. But the reason for it, in all likelihood, is baseball. Webster just finished an all-state campaign on the diamond in which he hit .522 with eight homers and 50 RBI, and the pro scouts are taking note. He's expected to spend a good bit of this summer at some baseball showcases as well as taking in a football camp or two, and the word is he'd like to try to play both sports in college. UL-Lafayette has made an offer to him to play both quarterback and baseball, but it seems likely he's eventually going to get a higher-profile opportunity. Webster is bringing his favorite target to LSU's camp in junior wide receiver Jarvis Landry (6-1/190), who is likely to be one of the state's top five players in the 2011 class. The word on Landry is he's a virtual lock for LSU, and while he hasn't received an offer yet he's likely to get one next week.
Gainesville, FL High School cornerback DeVont'a Davis (6-1/190) is also slated to be in town for the camp. Davis, an All-Region pick after registering 46 tackles and two interceptions last year, has offers from Arkansas, Louisville and Central Florida thus far. With LSU bringing in stars like James Haynes, Jonathan Mincy and Tony Hurd at the camp, Davis will have a tall order on his hands earning an offer from the Tigers - particularly given that LSU is also in excellent shape for New Orleans Newman safety/cornerback Ronnie Vinson and Lancaster, TX speedster Tyler Stephenson, who has generated raves everywhere he's been this summer. Cornerback is a position of need in this class for the Tigers, but they're likely to put a terrific group together at that position by Signing Day.
I lost a bet so here's my new sig for awhile. |
