Given High Fives: 1,091 Rep Power: 2496 | LaFell's decision was a good one, and not unexpected. While he was considered a likely second-round pick, there was a flood of underclassman wide receivers declaring for the draft this year who might have gone in front of him - Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree, Missouri's Jeremy Maclin, Florida's Percy Harvin, North Carolina's Hakeem Nicks, Missouri's Darius Hayward-Bey and Rutgers' Kenny Britt among them. By staying in school, LaFell lets all those guys clear out of his way and as of right now I don't know if he's not the top receiver on the board for the 2010 draft. Maybe Dez Bryant at Oklahoma State or Arrelious Benn at Illinois would go ahead of LaFell, but I wouldn't necessarily assume that to be the case.
By staying at LSU, LaFell also gives himself a chance to really connect with Jordan Jefferson and spend the offseason developing the kind of pitch-and-catch chemistry you really want between a quarterback and his top receiver. LaFell's work ethic and leadership will really help the rest of the receivers as well, and I can see him having a senior year even better than the campaign he just had (63 catches, 929 yards, eight touchdowns).
I lost a bet so here's my new sig for awhile. |
