Safeties Need to Improve LSU's guys at safety just look slow. I know they're not, as I've seen the 40 times and they're all 4.55 or better in the 40. But it's reaction time, it's quickness and it's getting there fast enough to make a play. And right now, LSU isn't getting any of it from Curtis Taylor, Harry Coleman, Danny McCray or Chad Jones. Jones especially is disappointing - his problems have to do with knowing where he's supposed to be rather than anything physical. Jones was the guy who was supposed to cover Ducre on Mississippi State's last touchdown when he caught an easy score in the flat, and you could see his teammates lighting him up for the blown assignment. I know he's still just a sophomore, but the guy has played enough football that this kind of stuff shouldn't be happening.
I don't want to completely rip the Tiger safeties, though, because they still do a nice job in run support and it's not like the breakdowns I've seen can't be fixed. Maybe it's an issue with guys having confidence in the defense, and maybe I'm just spoiled from watching guys like Laron Landry and Craig Steltz play the last few years. But slot receivers, tight ends and running backs are the ones catching passes on LSU, and that's something the safeties will have to put a stop to if the Tiger defense is going to start shutting people down. |
