Default Les Miles...best recruiter in the SEC?
I just saw that a 5 star QB out of Texas (Russell Shepard 6'2",185,4.4) committed to LSU's '09 class. Miles is starting off next year's recruiting class well. Hopefully it will continue with a couple more big-time recruits. Les has had LSU in the top 10 of recruiting for the past 3 years (I don't buy rivals.com ranking us at 11 this year). The only other name that comes to mind to rival Les's recruiting success would be Urban Meyer.

We were going after that kid too.... he's a huge pickup for you guys. I'd still say, shady or not, Meyer is the best recruiter in the SEC, to date.

The rest is a dog fight, save Petrino, Petrino I don't know enough about yet, except that he saved Arkansas class this year.

I think its hard to say that one coach is the best recruiter. You have to remember that the assistant coaches do a lot of recruiting too. Each assistant is assigned certain prosecpts or certain areas to recruit.

if you go to your teams commit list on rivals and click on 'page two" above the list you can see who recruited each player.

In Miles' three years recruiting he has placed 5th 6th and 7th according to scout (this is not including the transition year from $aban to Miles).

Every one of the other names mentioned has had a respectable recruiting class (go figure...we are the best conference...we will have the best recruiting). In my opinion the only other coach with as consistent top-10 or better class is Meyer. Of course the other coaches have had more time in the conference and therefore a greater chance not to place a class in the top 10. But so far at least, Meyer and Miles have had their teams in the top 10 EVERY year. Given this is pretty subjective and depends on what polls one looks at and as True Grit said recruiting can't be completely contributed to the head coach but the head coach keeps the team's reputation up around the country (through his game planning the year before...through his hiring of the assistant recruiters and many other duties). I think we will continue to see teams such as Bama Georgia LSU UF and maybe USC one day at the top of the recruiting classes. After all, the best conference deserves the best players.

That's strange because according to Rivals, UGA has finished ahead of LSU for three of the last four years.

hahaha Agreed...Notice that I said it depends on the site...and Georigia has been ahead of LSU 2/3 years Miles has actually been here according to rivals...not too shabby. We will have to see how it goes over the next years to come. There's not too much that separates the top-10; and if your team is in the top-10 consistently, you will be a damn strong football program. (LSU,UF,Georgia have all been in the top-10 for the past three years with the exception of LSU at #11 this year according to rivals and look at who has been favored to win the conference/national title the past three years...LSU,UF,Georgia) All three are outstanding coaches, and I might be slightly biased lol. I haven't seen any of Georgia Florida or Bama's commitments for the '09 class. I know these verbal commitments tend to change but I think LSU is setting up nicely for next year already.

LSU will be top 3 in recruiting. Probably #2 behind USC.

Miles has done damn good. But Meyer and Saban have had some slam dunk classes themselves.

I will say this. Meyer seems to be the recruiter most likey to feed the recruits a gigantic line of bullshit, and blow em' off once they've signed the dotted line.

There's no doubt that Miles definitely has the type of personality that 99% of high school players love to see and would love to play for. To say that he is the best of the best in the business is probably a bit of a stretch but there's no doubt that he's in the upper echelon of recruiters. Honestly, I feel that all of the SEC coaches are at a bit of an advantage. SEC schools have rabid fanbases, great weather and pretty much everything you would look for as a player. USC has a simililar situation and we see the recruits they crank out every year. In any case, Les is definitely one of the best and, as you guys will soon find out, winning a National Championship works wonders for recruiting.

Also, welcome to the site soccaplaya, bout damn time you joined.

Whatever...when you sign top players, you lose some here and there due to lack of PT...I've yet to see where a recruit said, "Coach Meyer lied to me." We've lost 5 players due to attrition over the past 4-5 months and all were non-contributors and their transfers were related to PT...or lack-there-of.

I'm not gonna throw disparaging remarks at Les' expense...but I will say this...LSU and UF recruit a lot of the same players...UF has to "pass" on some of these players due to grades...yet LSU always seems to get them in...hmmm.
