Given High Fives: 728 Rep Power: 1026 | Miles: Perrilloux could return to team -- but not yet LSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux has a chance to return to the football team, but he has much to do before that, LSU coach Les Miles said Wednesday at a press conference to kick off spring football. "Quickly, Ryan Perrilloux, I suspended him indefinitely. He broke team rules, and I really don't want to spend a lot of time thinking and talking about him," Miles said. "His responsibility is to do everything right and get back on this team. And I'll focus on the guys that are competing for jobs on our team currently." The defending national champion Tigers open spring practice on Friday.
Perrilloux was suspended indefinitely by Miles on Feb. 18 for continuing to miss team meetings, class and other team functions. It was Perrilloux's third suspension over the last 10 months and his second indefinite suspension. The junior from East St. John High outside of New Orleans was suspended indefinitely last May after Baton Rouge Police cited him for trying to enter a gambling casino with false identification. That suspension was lifted in August with the beginning of preseason practice after Perrilloux performed community service as well as running Tiger Stadium steps in early morning hours and other duties handed down by Miles.
Perrilloux was suspended for less than a week last November for his role in a bar fight near the LSU campus. He was not arrested, but Miles did not let him travel with the team to the Alabama game in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Nov. 3. He returned to the team the following Monday. Miles was asked for more information about the suspension of Perrilloux but offered little. "My discipline is about team discipline," Miles said. "You will never know stuff. And then at some point in time, you'll get to know stuff and then it'll be a concrete piece. The point that I'm making to you is with these things, you take into account that a promise was made on a mother's couch."
Miles recruited and signed Perrilloux, the No. 1 prep quarterback in the nation, in February of 2005 after just replacing former LSU coach Nick Saban in early January. Perrilloux was likely not coming to LSU had Saban remained coach and had committed to Texas before changing his mind and signing with LSU. "You take into account the responsibility that you have to your program and your team, and those are the two things," Miles said. "Not the media. Not the voting media. Not who should be and what should be suspended and how long and what do you think. You guys get no vote. You got no say. You've got speculation, and whatever you'd like to do. OK. But the reality of it is this is a team member that's no longer a part of the team in the short term. It's a very serious issue, and it's not something that I'm going to speculate and encourage conversation. He's suspended. Let's go on." (Monroe Newstar) |
