UGA moves quickly on All-America DB Greg Reid
By Phil Giltman | Tuesday, January 6, 2009, 11:01 AM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greg Reid caught UGA’s attention with his MVP performance in Sunday’s Under Armour All-America game.
Reid, the AJC’s all-classification player of the year, told the AJC he was contacted by Georgia assistant Mike Bobo on Monday and agreed to take an official visit to Athens on Jan. 30. Reid is a defensive back and wide receiver from Lowndes.
“[Bobo] said my scholarship offer from Georgia was still on the table, that I could take it at any time. It was there waiting for me,” Reid said.
The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Reid had two interceptions in the Orlando all-star game and thought he had a third, but it was ruled an incompletion. “To tell you the truth, I didn’t think I did as much as I could. I thought I could’ve helped out my team more.”
Reid made big news last week when he backed away from his longtime commitment to Florida because he felt he rushed his initial decision.
He was later asked if he had any interest in Georgia, which had made him an early offer, and Reid at that time said he was “unsure.” His talk with Bobo and other UGA commitments at the all-star game, most notably ECI tailback Washuan Ealey, evidently changed his mind.
“I’m from the state of Georgia, so I need to look at the Georgia Bulldogs,” Reid said. “They have a great program and a great coach. I want to go up there and look around for myself, meet the coaches, the players and see what it’s all about.”
Reid said he plans to announce his college decision on signing day, and it projects to be an all-out war between Georgia and Florida. Reid said he plans on making an official visit to Florida on Jan. 16 and Mississippi State on Jan. 23. He also is talking to several other schools, including Florida State and Texas.
Reid also received MVP honors at the GACA North-South All Star Classic in Columbus, Ga. on Dec. 29. Reid also likely be mentioned as a candidate for some national player of the year awards.
“I’ve received a lot of awards, but winning MVP at Under Armour was a real blessing,” he said. “I feel I represented Georgia well.”
Reid had to cut his interview short with the AJC on late Monday night. “Sorry about this, but I’ve got to go. It’s [Florida coach Urban Meyer] calling me on the other line.”
So reese, you got any info on Rueben Randle? We're on his list, but do we have a shot at him?

The University of Georgia is having a great new year. With the decision of Coach Garner to stay at UGA, they have now built momentum with two premier prospects commiting to the Bulldogs. First was 5-star cornerback Branden Smith, and minutes ago 4-star Defensive End Montez Robinson joined the growing class.
"I just finished telling the coaches I was ready to come to UGA," said the Avon(Ind) standout.
The staff let him know how they felt about their newest Dawg.
"Yeah they seemed really, really excited. I think I could hear someone jumping for joy, but it couldn't have been Coach G."
With offers from 3 perennial powers in the south, one may wonder why he would consider playing so far away from home.
"I'm ready to get out of here now," he said jokingly with younger siblings heard in the background. "Seriously though, I can't wait to get to Athens."
The University of Georgia won out for his services, and they sold him on everything possible.
"Oh it was the whole package. The coaches, the players, the facilities, the education, add all that up with the future championship trophies, you can't beat that."
Rumors began swirling around last week that the 6-foot-5, 235-pound end had been favoring the Bulldogs. His teammates at the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl made sure to seal the deal.
"Oh yeah Gill and Mett were working on me, they made sure I was leaving in red and black."
Earlier in the year, it seemed as though UGA was not in it for Robinson, but he said that was not the case.
" I have loved UGA the whole time ,when they started recruiting me, I liked everything they showed me."
Will the Rivals250 prospect keep his ears open to other schools?
"No, I'm done with the process. Like I said before, I cannot wait to get to Athens."
Some fans in Georgia may not know what kind of player they will be getting in Montez, and he let them know exactly what to look for.
"I am a player with excellent speed and quickness off the ball. I make a habit of getting in offensive linemen's heads. But I need to work on my overall technique before I get there. I cannot get by with just athleticism in the SEC, got to have everything in tune to succeed. I hope to do that and not only become a standout player, but help win that championship they been waiting on."
With Rodney Garner staying at UGA, Indiana DE quickly commits to Bulldogs
By Staff Reports | Wednesday, January 7, 2009, 11:01 AM
Rodney Garner’s decision to remain as Georgia’s recruiting coordinator is benefitting the Bulldogs.
Defensive end Montez Robinson of Avon, Ind., called Garner on Tuesday to commit to Georgia over Auburn and Alabama. Robinson told the AJC he wouldn’t have made that same call if Garner had taken another job at Tennessee.
“I still might’ve picked Georgia in the end, but I wouldn’t have decided then [Tuesday], that’s for sure,” Robinson said. “Coach Garner has had a big influence on my recruiting, and it meant a lot to me when he said he was going to stay at Georgia.”
“That says a lot about [Garner], that other schools wanted him. That also says a lot for Georgia, that he decided to stay with a great program.”
What if Garner had left? “I’d still consider Georgia, but I would’ve wanted to know why [Garner] left. Then, like anyone else, I would’ve waited to see who they would’ve hired to replace him, and then make my decision from there.
“Fortunately [Garner] is staying and I don’t have to worry about it. It’s over, and I’m a Georgia Bulldog.” Garner also coaches UGA’s defensive linemen and will be Robinson’s position coach.
Ironically, Robinson has already taken an official visit to Georgia, but it was in late November when he was still committed to Auburn. Georgia coach Mark Richt didn’t put a lot of pressure on Robinson at the time, telling him “if you ever decide to change, we’ve got a place for you. And we’ll hold that scholarship until signing day for you.”
Robinson backed away from his Auburn commitment after the coaching change. Does he plan to visit Georgia again this month? “No, I saw all I needed to see when I was there last time. I’m going to stay here and focus on my grades.”
One final question: Why would an Indiana player be so interested in the SEC? It turns out that Robinson spent part of his childhood in Alabama. “I lived there for four years, but that was long enough to see that the SEC has the best college football in the world.”
Georgia also got some huge news on Monday when Lowndes two-way standout Greg Reid said he will take an official visit to Athens on Jan. 30.
Meanwhile, other Georgia recruits have been trying to recruit tight end Orson Charles.
Robinson is commitment No. 18 for Georgia, which is expected to sign no more than 20 players for its 2009 recruiting class. That number could change with attrition among Georgia players: Players leaving early for the NFL, players transferring to other schools, players quitting football because of medical reasons, etc.
TE Orson Charles recruited by other UGA prospects
By Michael Carvell | Wednesday, January 7, 2009, 11:00 AM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Troup offensive lineman Chris Burnette, who has committed to UGA, said he did his best to recruit Orson Charles for the Bulldogs.
Charles is ranked as one of the nation’s top tight ends, and just finished his senior season by helping Plant High win Florida’s Class AAAA championship. Plant’s quarterback was Aaron Murray, who is enrolling early at UGA.
Back to Burnette: He was roommates with Charles at the U.S. Army All-America Bowl and said he put in a few good words for UGA.
“Hopefully we’ll [UGA] be able to land him in the next few weeks,” Burnette said. “He really didn’t have any questions about Georgia, I think Aaron has done a good job of answering all of those.”
“Orson said that he was going to weigh out his options and pray about it. He wants to play somewhere that his mother could come see him play. That’s important to him.”
Charles has kept a low profile recently about his recruiting, but has been looking hard at Florida State, Georgia, Southern Cal, Florida and Miami.
