State’s No. 1 prospect, Branden Smith, commits to UGA

Mother knows best for the state’s No. 1 college football prospect.
Branden Smith followed his mother’s advice and committed to Georgia on Sunday night.
The defensive back from Atlanta’s Booker T. Washington picked the Bulldogs over Alabama, Florida and Florida State during ESPN’s telecast of the Under Armour All-America game.
“He has been wanting to go to Georgia for a long time,” said Smith’s mother, Teresa Wynn said after the announcement. “He liked it when we went down there for [his official visit].”
“He can get his No. 1 jersey at Georgia, and he has the chance to play early if he works hard.”
Wynn endorsed the Bulldogs last month after meeting Georgia coach Mark Richt. “It’s a wonderful, wonderful choice. [Richt] is very nice and a church-going man … I know he will take care of my baby.”
In the TV ceremony, Smith had all four hats in front of him, and then narrowed down to Georgia and Alabama before pointing to his brother Anthony Wynn, who took off his shirt to reveal an UGA jersey with the No. 1 on it.
“[Georgia] is a good school, great academics, and I really connected to the coaching staff,” Smith said on ESPN.
Georgia has told Smith he can be “another Champ Bailey,” and play both ways for the Bulldogs. He is expected to compete right away at cornerback, while UGA offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has promised to install some special plays at wide receiver.
Georgia now will focus all of its in-state recruiting efforts toward Carver-Columbus linebacker Jarvis Jones, the state’s No. 2 prospect.
Also, one of UGA’s top out-of-state targets, wide receiver Marlon Bown of Memphis, had an electrifying 71-yard touchdown in the game.
Jarvis Jones: UGA’s last remaining target in the state

Now that the UGA has landed Booker T. Washington cornerback Branden Smith, the state’s No. 1 prospect, the Bulldogs will go after No. 2.
Jarvis Jones, who is ranked the Georgia’s second-best prospect by both the AJC and Rivals, is the last remaining in-state target for UGA (at least for now).
How important is Jones to the Bulldogs? On the first day of last month’s contact period, Jones was the first prospect that UGA visited. And the Bulldogs dispatched six assistant coaches to let him know his importance.
The Carver-Columbus linebacker was impressed with UGA’s efforts, but he has kept a poker face about his college decision. Jones has already taken recruiting trips to Southern Cal and Georgia, and plans official visits to Texas, LSU and Florida later this month.
we now have 17 commits which is currently all the availible scholarships that we have to give next year. we know that stafford and moreno could open up one or 2 more but i think we still have standing offers with..
jarvis jones
marlon brown
bobbie massie
cameron kenney
orson charles
i kno there more players then that have offers but those are the ones that have shown the most interest in uga.
as far as greg reid goes, scout says uga hasnt offered him and rivals says they have. im sure if he wanted to go to uga they would have a spot for him though.
UGA moves quickly on All-America DB Greg Reid
By Phil Giltman | Tuesday, January 6, 2009, 11:01 AM

Greg Reid caught UGA’s attention with his MVP performance in Sunday’s Under Armour All-America game.
Reid, the AJC’s all-classification player of the year, told the AJC he was contacted by Georgia assistant Mike Bobo on Monday and agreed to take an official visit to Athens on Jan. 30. Reid is a defensive back and wide receiver from Lowndes.
“[Bobo] said my scholarship offer from Georgia was still on the table, that I could take it at any time. It was there waiting for me,” Reid said.
The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Reid had two interceptions in the Orlando all-star game and thought he had a third, but it was ruled an incompletion. “To tell you the truth, I didn’t think I did as much as I could. I thought I could’ve helped out my team more.”
Reid made big news last week when he backed away from his longtime commitment to Florida because he felt he rushed his initial decision.
He was later asked if he had any interest in Georgia, which had made him an early offer, and Reid at that time said he was “unsure.” His talk with Bobo and other UGA commitments at the all-star game, most notably ECI tailback Washuan Ealey, evidently changed his mind.
“I’m from the state of Georgia, so I need to look at the Georgia Bulldogs,” Reid said. “They have a great program and a great coach. I want to go up there and look around for myself, meet the coaches, the players and see what it’s all about.”
Reid said he plans to announce his college decision on signing day, and it projects to be an all-out war between Georgia and Florida. Reid said he plans on making an official visit to Florida on Jan. 16 and Mississippi State on Jan. 23. He also is talking to several other schools, including Florida State and Texas.
Reid also received MVP honors at the GACA North-South All Star Classic in Columbus, Ga. on Dec. 29. Reid also likely be mentioned as a candidate for some national player of the year awards.
“I’ve received a lot of awards, but winning MVP at Under Armour was a real blessing,” he said. “I feel I represented Georgia well.”
Reid had to cut his interview short with the AJC on late Monday night. “Sorry about this, but I’ve got to go. It’s [Florida coach Urban Meyer] calling me on the other line.”
