Washington’s Smith plans to announce college decision Sunday
By Michael Carvell | Wednesday, December 31, 2008, 03:00 PM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The state’s No. 1 prospect, Branden Smith, will announce his college decision on Sunday.
The defensive back from Booker T. Washington will choose between Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Florida State during the Under Armour All-America game, which kicks off at 8 p.m.
Georgia appears to be the school to beat for Smith, and his mother endorses the Bulldogs. However, Smith claims he switches between favorite schools every day and won’t know for sure until the game.
“Everybody has been giving me advice on why each school is the best for me, and I’ve been listening,” Smith said.
“Everything is still going through my mind. Whatever my heart tells me on Sunday, that’s the school I’m going to pick. The good thing is that I know I can’t go wrong with any of the four schools. They are all great schools.”
Brandon Smith is the biggest recruit of the year for us. not just because he is a 5 star player either. we need corners BAD. i think we have less depth at corner then any other postion on the team. we have two juniors, 1 soph and 1 fresman. thats all. and aside from asher allen who at most gives us 1 more year, we dont have a legit corner on the team.
Miami controversy may help UGA with TE Orson Charles
By Michael Carvell | Friday, January 2, 2009, 11:33 PM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Controversy surrounding Miami’s football program may benefit UGA in recruiting one of the nation’s top tight ends.
Orson Charles of Tampa’s Plant High has said he favors Miami over Georgia, Florida, and Florida State.
However, Plant coach Robert Weiner told the Miami Herald that “A player of mine won’t play for [Miami coach] Randy Shannon” again.
Weiner has been disappointed with Shannon’s treatment of former Plant quarterback Robert Marve. He was finally released from his scholarship at Miami this week, but with the stipulation that he cannot transfer to an ACC, SEC or Florida-based school.
Weiner told the Herald the transfer requirements were “the last line in a series of slaps in the face” toward Marve. Weiner also said Charles definitely won’t be attending Miami now.
Charles led Plant to last month’s Class AAAA championship. The team’s quarterback, Aaron Murray, has committed to UGA.
Sweet. Miami's loss could be our gain. You gotta figure that with Murray coming to UGA, that has got to be a big factor for Charles.... getting to continue playing with his high school QB.
UGA target Kwame Geathers nearly unstoppable in all-star game
By Michael Carvell | Saturday, January 3, 2009, 10:04 PM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Kwame Geathers, who is one of UGA’s top remaining targets for its 2009 football recruiting class, was named Defensive MVP of the Offense-Defense All-America Bowl near Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The defensive lineman from Carver’s Bay, S.C., finished with seven tackles and two sacks.
The 6-foot-6, 310-pound Geathers said he will make official visits to South Carolina, UGA, South Florida and North Carolina later this month. South Carolina is considered the team to beat for Geathers.
What are UGA’s chances of signing Geathers? UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner is a close friend of his family, and older brother Robert Geathers played at UGA.
However, another one of his brothers, Clifton Geathers, committed to UGA but later signed with South Carolina, where he is a current member of the Gamecocks
Branden Smith to announce during fourth quarter of Sunday’s game
By Michael Carvell | Saturday, January 3, 2009, 11:48 PM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Branden Smith, the state’s No. 1 prospect, said he is scheduled to reveal his college decision during the fourth quarter of Sunday night’s Under Armour all-star game on NBC.
UGA appears to be the team to beat for Smith, who is also considering Florida, Alabama and Florida State. Smith told the AJC again on Saturday in a telephone interview that he has no favorites, and will go with whatever college he feels is “best for me in my heart” on Sunday.
Smith, the defensive back from Booker T. Washington, said the game organizer’s have scheduled his announcement for the fourth quarter, but it is subject to change. Smith said he will be joined on the sidelines by family members, including his mother.
Contrary to popular rumors, Smith also said his decision will not be affected by the recent actions of Lowndes defensive back Greg Reid, the AJC’s all-classification Player of the Year, who backed off his longtime commitment to Florida. In other words, because Florida lost (at least temporarily) Reid, it didn’t gain any new advantage with Smith.
“Greg Reid is a great player, but I’d never make one of the biggest decisions of my life based on what someone is going to do, or not going to do,” Smith said. “There’s competition everywhere in college.”
UGA recruting coordinator rodney garner is interviewing with UT this weekend. thats terrible timing for us as he is the one that has been recruiting smith the whole time. not a good time to be looking around when your biggest recruit of the year is 24 hours from a decision.

Yeah no kidding. I'm hoping he's just doing this to get a pay raise... I'll be pissed if he bails on us and we lose out on our last recruits as a result. This is the time when you are supposed to be landing those big names.
WR Marlon Brown shows explosiveness in all-star game
By Michael Carvell | Monday, January 5, 2009, 08:32 AM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Wide receiver Marlon Brown of Memphis, who is coveted by UGA, had one of the most exciting plays in the Sunday night’s Under-Armour Bowl.
The 6-foot-5 Brown got a few steps ahead of Norcross defensive back Prince Kent (committed to Miami) on a slant pattern, caught the ball and raced 71 yards for a touchdown.
Carver-Atlanta safety Darren Myles Jr. tried to provide backside help, but was barely late in the play. Myles then accelerated in an effort to make the tackle, but did not gain any ground as the speedy Brown was in full stride towards the end zone.
Brown is UGA’s No. 1 target at wide receiver. Tennessee appears to be the team to beat for Brown, who has visited Athens twice and built a close relationship with another UGA recruit, QB Aaron Murray of Tampa, Fla.
Brown also has Ohio State and Florida as his finalists, and will announce his college decision on Feb. 4.

Is he the guy that said he wanted to see if Stafford was staying next season?
