Injuries ravaged Dogs in 2008
By Chip Towers | Thursday, November 20, 2008, 07:04 AM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

According to Ron Courson, Georgia’s director of sports medicine, the Bulldogs had only two season-ending injuries this time last season and one of those was to walkon Chris Gaunder, who managed to return later for the bowl game.

This season that number is 18.

Let that number roll around in your head a moment.

People wondering what happened to the Bulldogs this year can rest assured some of their struggles are at least partly due to injuries.

To be sure, not all of those are starters. If you count starters only, they have missed a combined total of 49 potential games so far because of injuries. That number includes of course left tackles Trinton Sturdivant and Vince Vance, defensive tackle Jeff Owens, middle linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, tight end Tripp Chandler and, the latest, right tackle Justin Anderson.

“That’s a lot,” coach Mark Richt stated flatly Wednesday.

But the number of starters missing doesn’t paint the full picture. That doesn’t take into account players like wide receiver Tony Wilson, linebackers Darius Dewberry, Akeem Hebron, Marcus Washington and Charles White and safety Quintin Banks. Those are players that, in addition to playing a lot of snaps on offense or defense, played on nearly every special teams units the Bulldogs field.

“It affects your scout teams, it affects your special teams, it affects everything,” Richt said. “I don’t want to go through that again.”

Georgia’s not alone. Auburn has had 16 players from its two-deep miss a combined 57 games. Among those are three starters — LB Tray Blackmon, OL Chaz Ramsey and DB Aairon Savage.

Anyway, regarding Georgia’s injuries: Legitimate reason for losing two games and not looking great in a couple of others or just lame excuses?

Thanks for posting this Reese.

I stopped counting players that got hurt and just figured we'd do what we need to do.

Truly amazing, and people continue to bitch about the way the team is playing. We should be so lucky that they are 9-2. Look at how Auburn's season has turned out. It really shows how much quality depth we do have.

exactly. take darryl gamble for example..before the season, he was a 3rd string MLB. but with ellerbee and marcus washington going down with injuries, he has played in every game and even started a few. gamble is a solid player and has had a nice season but really shouldnt have been on the field this year except for special teams. then with so many 1's and 2's being hurt, our special teams are full of walkons. i kno i have seen renner, a. williams, gloer, and boyd starting on special teams. thats at least 4 walk-ons that i have noticed starting on special teams. thats not good when other teams can afford to have some of there best players on special teams.

Darryl Gamble is a good player, but he was like you said a 3rd string MLB. Washington has been out since the spring and Ellerbe missed like 4 games. Dewberry and Hebron have missed games as well, and that is all just at LB. The whole team has been banged up, thankfully QB and RB are probly the only 2 positions were we have been healthy.

I keep meaning to ask this, did anyone notice that Shaun Chapas has been starting and playing more so than Southerland? I assume that Southerland is fully recovered, so Chapas must have impressed the coaches.

Did you read the F'n article? It clearly says that UGA has been more banged up then Auburn. UGA has had 18 season ending injuries, and countless more. Auburn has had 16, and only 3 of them have been starters.

i noticed and actually mentioned it in 2 other threads in the main forum. there was a couple All-SEC threads and southerland was getting alot of votes and i brought up the fact that chapas has been playing more then southerland this year. nobody said anything so i thought i was the only one that noticed. chapas looks quicker, faster and more athletic then southerland. southerland may be a better blocker but i think chapas is more versatile.

I've wondered the same thing. I'm not sure if Southerland is 100%. I have seen him lined up at TE a couple of times, but maybe Chapas is just coming along and earning the time. Wish I had an answer for ya, but I'm curious myself.
