Looks like its not serious and Spikes will be a game time decision for Hawaii.
There is quite a bit of chatter going around about UF going to a 3-4 set or maybe even a 3-3-5 set. Well see but look for Brandon Spikes to be back by Miami and def. by UT

The Gators would beat Hawaii by 20+ using third-stringers.

They don't actually HAVE a 3rd string for defense. They use all their schollies for offense.

Yep, Meyer is quoted in several stories saying that a 3-3-5 will only be a situational setup, but the 4-3 will still be their primary scheme. Also, as for Harvin:

Notebook: Harvin practices for first time
Robbie Andreu
Sun sports writer

Published: Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 12:38 p.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 12:38 p.m.

Wide receiver Percy Harvin practiced for the first time in the preseason Saturday, and there's a chance he could play in Saturday's opener against Hawaii, Florida coach Urban Meyer said.

"He didn't go the whole way, but he practiced," Meyer said. "There's a chance."

Before Saturday, Harvin had been limited to conditioning work while still rehabbing his surgically repaired heel. His status for Saturday's game will be determined during practice this week.

Quarterback Tim Tebow said it was good to have Harvin back, and that the junior looked even quicker than usual.

"Everyone else has been practicing all camp and they've got heavy legs," Tebow said. "Percy was fresh, so he really looked fast out there today."

Little to say about Fay

Fay did little to interrupt Florida's flow the past few days.

The Gators managed to get in a two-and-a-half hour scrimmage on Friday, then practiced again Saturday. UF did not practice Thursday, but Meyer had said earlier in the week that his team was ahead of schedule and could afford to miss a day.

Meyer said he quickly got his players together for Friday's practice when there was a break in the weather.

"We had guys in the weight room and in the training room," he said. "We got out there had a great practice."

Lots of captains

UF's five seniors on offense, one on defense and one on special teams are among the 11 players named as captains for the season by Meyer on Saturday.

The senior captains are defensive tackle Javier Estopinan, tight end Cornelius Ingram, tailback Kestahn Moore, wide receiver Louis Murphy, long-snapper James Smith, offensive guard Jim Tartt, offensive tackle Jason Watkins and offensive tackle Phil Trautwein.

Florida's other captains are Tebow, a junior, and junior linebackers Brandon Spikes and Ryan Stamper.

The captains for each game will be determined on a weekly basis.

This and that

Meyer said Murphy, Riley Cooper and junior college transfer Carl Moore have separated themselves from the pack at wide receiver. ... Senior Jonathan Phillips and true freshman Caleb Sturgis will carry their battle for the field-goal kicking job into game week. Meyer said Phillips is slightly ahead of Sturgis at this point, but he's not ready to name a starter yet. ... Meyer does know who his top two safeties are — Major Wright at free and sophomore Ahmad Black at strong. "Will Hill is our No. 3 safety right now and he plays like it. Sometimes he doesn't. He's a very talented guy."

Meyer was quoted earlier in the week as saying Hill actually plays like the #1 safety sometimes, and sometimes like the #3 safety. I think we'll see plenty of him this year as a true freshman.

Both injuries are described as nagging ones, so I really don't see much problem. I'd keep them both out. We won't need them against Hawaii, and may not even need them for Miami. But, the UF medical staff says Harvin's soreness from surgery shouldn't be recurring once healed, so I say let it heal properly. Meyer said he's going to let Harvin play even more at tailback this season.

"We're going to let the dog eat," Meyer said. "When the dog's ready to eat, he eats. I think (Harvin) is one of the best players in college football."

Good read GU and thats encouraging news about Harvin.
Call me over cautious but I have no problem resting Harvin, Spikes and whoever else may be ailing for the Hawaii game. The Rainbow trash from Hawaii are just not worth any of our key players getting seriously hurt because they needed another week before coming back.

yes I have Percy on my fantasy team and I read about him practicing, Urban says he might play alittle bit when the games already out of hand, so I doubt he plays at all...

I hope he doesn't. I'll be interested to see what Rainey can do with his share of Harvin's touches. Harvin will get his in due time.

I would also rather have him not play at all and give him lots of rest for the thugs!

Not a bad problem for Meyer to have. At his current size, he could be an every-down back every bit as good as Moreno; but with all the skills of an elite WR. I'm so ready for games, it's like that feeling you had as a kid on Christmas Eve.

Florida Spikes, Harvin out for Saturday?
article I attempted to write....might not be as good as gatorcountry, gatorzone, but I tried

www.gatorsportsnation.com

i put a percy harvin picture below the article to..

http://gatorsportsnation.com/spikes-...-for-saturday/

Everybody knows this month of August is known for injuries. As the Gators still suffer key injuries even a week to go until game time they still have ways around it. There has been news and the word has gotten out that Captain and star linebacker Brandon Spikes has injured his foot in last weeks practice and is still questionable to play against the Hawaii Warriors. Percy Harvin is still battling through his heel injury which he had surgery in the off season and has not been able to get back to the full 100% the Gators need him at. I believe that Spikes and Harvin should hold out on the Hawaii and Miami game in the swamp. The first SEC game is what is more important but with the suspended Miami players just gives Florida a larger chance of victory and may not need Spikes and Harvin.

Brandon James is a threat on special teams returning the kickoff and punts and he should see some time playing receiver with Harvin being out. Junior linebacker Ryan Stamper would most likely be starting in Spikes place if Coach Meyer chooses to sit Spikes out. In 15 games, the 6′ 2/232 pound junior recorded 25 tackles. Is it the right move to sit Spikes and Harvin for Saturday?? I think they both need to just sit and watch for the first 2 games because Florida has enough backup behind Spikes at linebacker and Gators are stacked at receivers, so there’s not a problem to find a replacement to fill in the slot. Florida will kick off against Hawaii this Saturday at 12:30 at the swamp.

The news on Spikes wasn't so assuring.

Meyer said Spikes was kept out of practice again and he's unsure how long he'll be sidelined.
Rumors on some Gator boards that this isn't so much a foot injury as much as it is a "foot injury".

Quincy Carter used to have similar problems with his "wrist" while at UGA.
