Freshman Tennessee football players Nu'Keese Richardson and Mike Edwards, who last week were charged with attempted armed robbery, have been dismissed from the football team, coach Lane Kiffin announced Monday.
Freshman safety Janzen Jackson, who also stands charged in the case, will continue to be barred from team activities while Kiffin awaits additional information. Jackson and receiver Richardson were two of Kiffin's most prized signees from his first recruiting class.
"After extensive and thorough research of the situation over the last four days and considering various disciplinary options, I've decided it's in the best interest of our program to remove Nu'Keese and Mike," Kiffin said in a statement. "As I've said many times before, we hold our student-athletes to an extremely high standard on and off the field. Our student-athletes must be responsible members of society, and this type of conduct will not be tolerated."
The three 18-year-olds are accused of demanding money from three people at a gas station near Tennessee's campus early Thursday morning. A powered pellet gun was recovered in the players' car after they were stopped by police near the Gibbs Hall dormitory on the Knoxville campus, where the Vols' freshman football players live.
They were arrested shortly after the incident but have all been released from jail.
"We want a positive culture for our student-athletes that allows them to succeed in the classroom, on the field, and in life after college," Kiffin said in his statement. "My hope is that these two young men will learn from their terrible decision. Clearly, their actions have no place in our program."

My best friend is a Tennessee fan, and we talk every day about different football news. Bama or Tennessee related. I told him that this could be a HUGE distraction for the team this weekend at Ole Miss, and not only that but missing Janzen Jackson would hurt alot and give Snead some confidence. I didnt get to watch the game or hear much about it (my friend didnt seem to wanna talk about it). So this is just a Bama fan genuinely wanting to know what happened? How much did the three arrested this week affect the Vols? I know McCluster did something special for Ole Miss, but was the Tennessee Defense sluggish or out of it? Offense?

"We're Lil Wayne fans," Kiffin said. "We played him a number of times out here before (during practice). Guess we're getting a little street cred."
The Volunteers coaches often play hip-hop and rap music during practice to motivate the players, and as one of rap's most popular artists, Lil Wayne is often heard among the selections.
"We all thought it was really cool ... and more kids will think Tennessee is back on the map now," linebacker LaMarcus Thompson said.
The first-year coach famously promised a win over Florida and accused Gators coach Urban Meyer of cheating during recruiting. The Southeastern Conference reprimanded Kiffin for a second time on Monday after he openly criticized league officials, warning the coach he was facing suspension should he run his mouth again.
Kiffin has a reason for saying the things he does: He's trying to bring some much-needed attention to a Tennessee program that was dropping off the national football scene before he was hired in December.
And a little pop culture cred from Lil Wayne won't hurt either, he said.
"You're dealing with kids in the age frame, you know we're dealing all the way from eighth graders to seniors in high school, so the more we're out there the better. It's good," he said.
