How does the old axiom go, nothing says college football Saturdays like cool weather, changing leaves and a bunch of racist xenophobes wearing white hoods protesting on campus? Or something like that, I think.

Anyway, the Mississippi White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan plan to stage a protest on the Ole Miss campus to show their disapproval of Houston Nutt's offensive philosophy the university's decision to remove "From Dixie with Love" from the Ole Miss band's song selection.

Students were warned that their continuing the traditional chant of "the South will rise again" during the song would result in the song being barred from the game-day experience. The students continued the chant, and the song was removed from the band's rotation.

And that decision has the great titan of the Mississippi chapter of the KKK more upset than when he witnesses an interracial marriage ceremony a Jevan Snead pick late in the fourth quarter of a close game.

"We are coming to Ole Miss to say enough is enough on attacking our Christian, southern heritage and culture, and it's time for every person to have a right to freedom of speech," Shane "Billy Joe Jim Bob" Tate said according to the LSU student newspaper.

"We aren't coming there to cause problems or cause trouble. Trouble has already been caused by a handful at Ole Miss, including the black student body president, who wants to shape Ole Miss into yet another liberal sodomite college."

On the plus side, it'll be the closest any of the protesters or their families get to college, so they have that going for them. Which is good.

With all our back court injuries returning, and a stud frosh playing center, I think we can make some serious noise in the West. Maybe even make a trip to the big dance. What's say you guys?

Massie's progress welcomed by Rebels

Massive freshman could bolster UM's thin offensive line

OXFORD — When Bobby Massie - all 6 feet 7 and 345 pounds of him - showed up on the Ole Miss campus in August, the first instinct was to instantly label the highly touted prep school recruit as Michael Oher Version 2.0.

But instead of looking like the All-America offensive tackle who anchored the O-line last season, Massie looked much more like any other freshman trying to find his way during the first few months. He had his good days and bad ones, adjusting slowly to the physical nature of the Southeastern Conference and the expanded playbook.

"It was hard," Massie said. "Really hard. I just kept trying to do what they told me to do, but it's all coming so fast. Sometimes you get frustrated."

But after eight games of sporadic playing time, Massie earned his first career start at right tackle last Saturday against Northern Arizona after starter John Jerry was suspended because of an academic violation.

What followed was something of a revelation. Massie had eight knockdown blocks and graded out as one of the team's best linemen. He even earned an honorable mention from the SEC for offensive lineman of the week.

"Now he's making us better," UM offensive line coach Mike Markuson. "And that's got us really excited."

Because of his rapid improvement, it's going to be hard to keep Massie off the field on Saturday when Ole Miss (6-3, 2-3 SEC) hosts Tennessee (5-4, 2-3) in a key conference game. Kickoff is at 11 a.m., and the game will be televised on CBS.

Jerry, who's been an All-SEC caliber lineman for the past few years, is back after his one-game suspension. But there's been talk among the coaches of moving the senior to guard to make way for Massie.
"I just know we are definitely going to have him ready to go," Nutt said. "We'll see how it plays out this week. He's just too big of a body. He's kind of caught on to things and understands what we want - especially in the running game."

Maybe his best trait during the Northern Arizona game was a willingness to "find work," Nutt said. Even when there was no blitz or he had already finished a block, he'd lumber downfield looking for someone else to flatten.
"He did some things uncharacteristic of a freshman," Markuson said.

"Ever since I've played football, the biggest thing I've been taught is the play's not over until the whistle blows," Massie said. "You can always do something to help out."

Jerry said he didn't have a problem moving to guard if Massie is ready to play tackle. He's been mentoring the freshman since the first day of preseason camp and was almost like a proud dad watching during the Northern Arizona game.

"Bobby did great," said Jerry, who at 6-6 and 335 pounds would form an imposing right side of the line with Massie. "He was very relentless. But he practices that way every day, so it didn't surprise me that he did that in a game."

Even with Massie's emergence, it's unknown how much he'll play against Tennessee or the rest of the season. Senior Brandon Green has still been the starting right guard when the team lines up to stretch before practice. Jerry is the starting right tackle with Massie right behind on the second team.

But the one sure thing is that Massie's improvement finally gives Nutt some options along the offensive line. And that's a welcome change for a group that's been razor-thin for much of the season, especially against a Tennessee defensive line that is one of the best in the SEC.

"When you watch Bobby play," Nutt said. "He doesn't look like a freshman anymore."

Again, I ask: What is indisputable evidence?

The replay official in the Auburn-Ole Miss game overturned a batted interception on the field in the second quarter and ruled that the ball hit the ground before Ole Miss’ Jonathan Cornell secured it.

Perhaps the replay official had the luxury of different angles than we did at home, but I saw nothing in the replays shown on television that would come close to rising to the level of being indisputable.

Put it this way: If that play was indisputable, how in the world was Dustin Doe’s interception return not overturned last week when replays in the Florida-Mississippi State game showed that the ball was clearly out of his hands before he crossed the goal line?

Obviously, there are different versions of what’s indisputable.

The truth comes out?
(I'm only posting something that I found on-line from a Little Rock newspaper from a Razorback beatwriter....nothing more....discuss.)

[LIKE IT IS: Nutt awfully festive after beating Arkansas
By Wally Hall

LITTLE ROCK — They met at midfield for the customary handshake.
It lasted the normal few seconds, and a disappointed Bobby Petrino turned and walked off the field.

An incredibly happy Houston Nutt lingered for pictures and video. His twin daughters were there.
It was a moment he was cherishing thoroughly. His Ole Miss players doused him with Gatorade after beating 3-3 Arkansas in a game that wasn’t as close as the 30-17 score.

After observing and writing about approximately 125 Nutt-coached games, this scribe thinks this one was his best ever.
He managed the clock and his team.

He didn’t ask the Rebels to do things they couldn’t do,and he relied heavily on his biggest weapon, Dexter Mc-Cluster.
Mostly, he coached to win.

His joy after the game was hard earned and well deserved. But it will always be a bit puzzling why he feels so vindicated for beating the school where he coached for 10 years before quitting to take the Ole Miss job.
He was not fired or run off at Arkansas. At Nutt’s final UA news conference Nov. 26, 2007, when it was announced he was quitting, then-Chancellor John White said emphatically he had offered Nutt a contract extension and that it had been turned down.] :hmmm:

JACKSON, Miss. -- The University of Mississippi has shortened one of its fight songs to discourage football...

JACKSON, Miss. -- The University of Mississippi has shortened one of its fight songs to discourage football fans from chanting "the South will rise again" during part of the tune, which critics say is an offensive reminder of the region's intolerant past.

However, some fans have continued to recite the chant at the end of the song, "From Dixie With Love," despite the change made last week at the chancellor's request. The Ole Miss band performs the medley before and after games.

SEC blog
ESPN.com's Chris Low writes about all things SEC in his conference blog.

• Blog network:
College Football Nation

Earlier this month, the Ole Miss student government passed a resolution suggesting the chant be replaced by the phrase, "To hell with LSU."

Dan Jones, who became Ole Miss chancellor in July, said he asked the school's band director, David Wilson, to modify the song to support the efforts of the Associated Student Body. He said he has received complaints from alumni that the slogan is offensive.

"The fact is, the phrase 'The South Will Rise Again' is not part of our tradition or spirit, and it is inconsistent with the university's values and what Ole Miss stands for -- a great public university with a focus on the future," Jones said in a phone interview Thursday from the campus in Oxford.

The modified version of the song ends abruptly before the chanting phase starts. It was first played Saturday at Ole Miss's homecoming game against the University of Alabama at Birmingham, but that didn't stop some fans from chanting.

Brian Ferguson, 26, head of the Colonel Reb Foundation, said he views the university actions as an attempt to silence students.

"I think it's a big to-do about nothing. There were very few people other than the students who knew to say it," said Ferguson, whose organization works to preserve traditions at Ole Miss. But Ferguson agreed that the chant really isn't a tradition.

"If the students get fired up and upset enough about it, they're going to continue to say it. Our biggest fear is that that's going to lead them to eliminate 'From Dixie With Love,' altogether."

The song blends the Confederate Army's fight song, "Dixie," with the Union Army's "Battle Hymn of the Republic," according to Peter K. Frost, a visiting professor of history and international studies at Ole Miss.

The school has worked to erase its image as a bastion of the Old South, which was solidified in 1962 when James Meredith's admission as the first black student led to a bloody standoff.

The university six years ago decided not to have an on-field mascot during sporting events, getting rid of the long-standing Colonel Rebel, a white-haired old man who carries a cane and resembles a plantation owner. At the time, school officials had said they needed a more athletic-looking mascot. The teams are still called the Rebels.

Sophomore Cortez Moss, director of communications for the ASB, said the organization is trying to explain to students why the phrase is offensive.

"You take back on that slave mentality," said Moss, who is black. "I know the South won't rise again and the South can't rise again."

Former Netscape CEO Jim Barksdale, who donated $100 million to the university in 2000, said the chant should be abandoned.

"I hope it will pass on quietly and the students will refrain from the chant, but I found out a long time ago it's hard to tell students what to say and what not to say," Barksdale said Thursday.

Roun McNeill, a former ASB president who is now in law school at Ole Miss, said his own decision to refrain from the chant was easily made.

"I said the chant one day and there was a black family sitting in front of me and they turned around and gave me this look like I hurt them," McNeill said.
