STARKVILLE — Mississippi State forward Kodi Augustus apologized today for remarks he made last Friday that were critical of his team’s coaching staff. He'll serve a two-game suspension for making them, coach Rick Stansbury said.

“About the game Friday night, I was frustrated and mad,” Augustus said. “I mean, ever since I’ve been here we had never lost a season opener. Some comments I shouldn’t have made. They were immature comments. Like I said, I was frustrated. Wish I could have been out there more. I just want to apologize to my coaches, my teammates and all the fans. It'll never happen again.”

Barring changes for television, Mississippi State will be playing the following schedule for the 2010 football season:

9/4 Memphis
9/11 AUBURN
9/18 at LSU
9/25 GEORGIA
10/2 Alcorn State
10/9 at Houston
10/16 at FLORIDA
10/23 UAB
10/30 KENTUCKY
11/13 at ALABAMA
11/20 ARKANSAS
11/27 at OLE MISS

This schedule involves switching the dates of UAB and Alcorn State, which had previously been announced.

All right folks, this schedule looks pretty good. The OOC schedule looks like we could sweep those and get 4-0. We have winnable SEC games against Auburn, Kentucky, Georgia, and Arkansas.

Man this Florida loss sucks. Actually all losses this season have sucked equally as bad because we've had a chance to win all of them (save Auburn). We are literally a player or two away from being 5-3 instead of 3-5 right now. I think that's pretty impressive for the first year considering the lack of D-1 talent that was left on the roster from the previous regime.

We're eight games in and short one win of my preseason 4-8 prognostication. It's going to be a challenge to get another one but I have to think we'll pull one out either this weekend or maybe against Arkansas. It'll require a small miracle to beat Alabama and A+ play to take down Ole Miss. We still somehow have a chance to make a minor bowl but obviously it'll require that we win three out of the last four.. I just don't see that happening.

Overall, though, I'm as happy as can be with how the season has progressed. I honestly think we have a good head coach and we seem to be moving in the right direction. Our offense has improved tenfolds and the defense has some young playmakers. It's a must to wrap-up strongly in-state this recruiting season to build on in the future. We'll be better at every position next year except RB and it should translate into a few more wins. I look for us to be bowl eligible next year. We should sweep the non-conference slate and will only need a couple of SEC wins to make it to Memphis or Nashville.

What are your thoughts?

The Mississippi State coach called for consistency on kickoff offsides calls in his postgame remarks Saturday night. I followed up today asking what he thought about another critical call: A fourth-quarter interception return for a touchdown by Florida's Dustin Doe in which MSU thought it stripped the ball from Doe at the 1 yard line and recovered the fumble in the end zone. Doe's 23-yard return with 8:25 to play gave Florida a 29-13 lead in a game it went on to win 29-19. ESPN's replays appeared to show the ball coming free before the goal line.

In full, Mullen's response:

"We got a chance to watch that. I watched it all night on TV replays last night as well. Obviously, if you look at a call — in the course of a game, obviously, you're really disappointed with inconsistent calls in the game like offsides on a kickoff. Very, very inconsistent call with the three or four offsides that they were off on their kickoffs. The exact same thing that we do, we get called for it. I thought that was a big play in the game, where we would have had them pinned inside the five yard line. That being said, you just hope you get some consistency out of your officials. Whether it's a good call or a bad call, I don't know. It's a very inconsistent call, and that's disappointing. But that's in live speed of the game playing. To me, I'm going to find out who that video replay was. I've seen it over and over, views of the ball being out of his hand before he crossed the goal line. That's twice that a SEC replay official - I don't know why we even have replay right now in the Southeastern Conference if they are not going to utilize it. That's twice that they've blown calls on the replay with our games resulting in big plays and I think that's unexcusable for that official. I mean, I hope he is severely punished, if (he) ever works another SEC game again, because I think it is completely unacceptable. I can understand making a bad call in a live speed on a game like the offsides call. There's no excuse for a guy that has the amount of time to replay the video to make sure they get the call right. That's why we do instant replay. And I think it's embarrassing that they blew that call. I've seen the still shots with the ball out of his hand. So I don't think that's acceptable on a guy that is not watching it in live speed, has the ability to watch all the different angles."

Chris Talbott of the Associated Press followed up and asked if he thought SEC officials had struggled overall or in just a few instances. Officiating, it seems, has been the talk of the SEC in recent weeks.

Again, Mullen in full: "Well, you know, like I said: The bang-bang calls, haveing officials make a call that is in a live game speed, they're going to make some, they're going to miss some. All you hope for is consistency. The one that I'm disappointed in is, obviously, the replay, because that's twice now that the replay official has blown a call in one of our games. And I just don't see how that's acceptable. Someone that can look at a video tape over and over again and miss a call. You can understand a guy that has one one-hundredths of a second to make a call or a decision, with the athletes in the SEC, the speed that's going, but in a replay, that should never happen."

At this point, team spokesman Joe Galbraith, who was moderating the teleconference, intervened and said there would be no more questions about officiating.

The officiating crew was led by Penn Wagers, but the replay official's name is not on the final box score that was distributed to reporters.

Mullen should expect a reprimand from the Southeastern Conference for these comments, if recent history is any indicator. Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino received a reprimand last week.

In State's 31-24 loss to Houston on Oct. 10, Mullen and State were the victim of another perceived mistake by the replay officials, one that cost State a long pass play and turned the ball over on downs to Houston. In that play, Tyson Lee was ruled to be over the line of scrimmage when he threw to Leon Berry, but still frames from the call seemed to indicate that he wasn't. The criticism came over the play not being reviewed.

Expect the SEC to tell us to get over ourselves. We won't get an apology. We won't get a replay official was wrong. We'll get a "don't criticize the officials." And then, we'll get a No More Cowbells directive.
Apparently, UF students aren't willing to drive the 9 hours for this game...

The two tickets are in the Florida section. Just want to get back the face value of $50 so someone who cares can actually go to the game.
I'll be in Starkville starting Friday...
