LSU running back Charles Scott broke his collarbone against Alabama on Saturday and is lost for the remainder of the regular season, the school announced on Sunday night.

Scott, a senior, might be able to return for a bowl game.

He rushed for 83 yards on 13 carries, but the Tigers (No. 8 BCS, No. 9 AP) lost to the Crimson Tide (No. 2 BCS, No. 3 AP).

The hard-hitting affair left the Tigers (7-2, 4-2) without Scott and injured quarterback Jordan Jefferson for most of the second half.

On Jefferson, LSU coach Miles said on Saturday that the quarterback was "trying to get back in the game. We felt like it would be best that he sit."

Wide receiver Terrance Toliver said Saturday: "Losing those two guys was a big blow to our offense."

Scott ran for 542 yards this season and had 1,174 as a junior.

All that recruiting momentum LSU had in the spring and summer had come to a halt during the season -- until now.

The Tigers have received a commitment from defensive lineman Cassius Marsh of Oaks Christian High in Westlake Village, Calif., taking their number of commitments for the 2010 class to 23.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Marsh was rated as the No. 34 defensive tackle prospect in the country by Scouts Inc. He originally made a commitment to California and also considered USC, Arizona State and Oklahoma.

His visit to LSU for the Florida game is what sold him on the Tigers, who were ranked No. 6 in ESPN.com's latest recruiting rankings. LSU Tigers

Saturday night will mark the 50th anniversary of Billy Cannon's 89-yard punt return for a touchdown in LSU's 7-3 win over Ole Miss on Halloween Night in 1959. That punt return, considered one of the greatest plays in college football history, helped Cannon win the Heisman Trophy that year.

LSU holds the nation's longest non-conference winning streak at 21 straight games. LSU hasn't lost a non-conference game since a 30-25 defeat to Iowa in the Capital One Bowl to cap the 2004 season.

LSU has also won 26 consecutive non-conference games in Tiger Stadium, a stretch that goes back to the 2002 season when the Tigers dropped a 13-10 decision to UAB.

LSU has won 23 consecutive games over teams from Louisiana. The last time LSU lost to a team from Louisiana came in 1982 when the Green Wave beat the Tigers, 31-28, in Tiger Stadium.

LSU has won 33 of its last 34 Saturday night games in Tiger Stadium.

LSU is ranked in the top 10 during the month of October for the fifth straight year

Since the 2002 season, LSU is 49-11 in games which they were ranked in the Top 10.

LSU has limited its last 3 SEC opponents to a combined 36 points (Georgia 13, Florida 13, Auburn 10) - it's the fewest over any 3-game SEC span for LSU since 2005 when the Tigers held Mississippi State (7), Vanderbilt (6), and Florida (17) to a combined 30 points in a three-week stretch.

LSU coach Les Miles is 12-5 in games played during the month of October.

LSU has held its opponent scoreless in 9 of 20 quarters in SEC play this year, including first halves against both Georgia and Auburn.

Written by ESPN.com's Chris Low Wednesday, 21 October 2009 13:30 Outside of Alabama and Florida, nobody in the SEC has a better opportunity the second half of the season than LSU. If the Tigers can win out, they will play in the SEC championship game. That’s easier said than done. They still have to go to Alabama and to Ole Miss, while Auburn and Arkansas will come to Baton Rouge. The Tigers have shown the defensive prowess to win these next six games. First-year defensive coordinator John Chavis has LSU playing at a high level on that side of the ball, and look for the Tigers to do even more defensively from here on out. The reason it’s hard to pick the Tigers in the West at this point is because they’ve been so dysfunctional offensively. Sophomore quarterback Jordan Jefferson hasn’t found any rhythm throwing the ball, and the Tigers might also want to remember they have Charles Scott in the backfield. LSU also needs to find a way to get freshman Russell Shepard more involved.

Best-case scenario: The Tigers come out of the open date with a better idea of what they want to do offensively, get some production in the downfield passing game and play their way into the SEC championship game.

Worst-case scenario: The offense we saw during the first half of the season is the offense we’re going to see for the entire season, and the Tigers stumble to three more losses and an 8-4 finish in the regular season.

Prediction: LSU isn’t able to take down Alabama, but is good enough on defense to scratch out a 9-3 record and earn a berth in the Capital One Bowl.
